I love this lighting! I have tried this many times with some of my portraiture photography but I can never get it right. I have a Canon Rebel XSi and many lenses along with neutral density filters and reflectors. Is there a certain time of day I should be waiting till or is there just a lighting trick or filter I can use?

Hey Charlie,
thanks for the nice comment
I have to say that it also was my first outdoor only
shooting ...
I first tried it with ND filters and speedlites (tried to get
that Emily Soto look ).
But these pictures were made in the golden hour without any filter
or fill light. I put the camera into manual mode and tried to
expose for her face. And I knew that I wanted to get this shallow
depth of field, so I started with f2.8 (f2.8 because I had slight
focusing problems with the backlight :/)

Hope that helps you

At this moment, I am entirely thankful for the schooling I have had because I completely understood that!! What camera and lens do you use? I have a canon EOS XS right now but I am saving up for a Canon 5D Mark III!!!

Nice to hear ^^

I'm using a Canon 550D (I think that's a Rebel T2i in the US).
For my portrait stuff I mostly use the Canon 50mm 1.8 or the
Canon 85mm 1.8. I absolutely love the sharpness of those lenses
For a shallow depth of field I sometimes also use a 3 stop ND filter
in the studio.

I have all of those lenses and the ND filters! What about lighting?

For studio stuff?
Normally I tend to use 2 flashes in the front (Beauty Dish and Softbox, google
for Clamshell lighting). For the latest shootings I first added
2 flashes in the back for rim light and for the last shooting another one
for the spot in the back

So lovely! I really like the soft lighting, muted colors and the soft fabric of the dress. It all comes together really well.
