Velvet--Glove [2012-04-05 15:26:14 +0000 UTC]

A good basic intro for new users, I shall add it to my "UF Tutorials" faves so they can find it. Thanks!

Just one observation, though... I don't think saving a lot of textures on the presets menu is a good idea, generally. A few well used or favourite ones, yes, certainly, but I suspect a large number would just bog the program down. Usually I would recommend users make their own "Textures Library" with individual layers or groups saved in separate .upr files. I think this makes it much easier to visually browse the results and select suitable textures, with no limits on how many variations you can make and store (I must have 1000's in my own collection now).

Well, that would be my tip anyway.

Jimpan1973 In reply to Velvet--Glove [2012-04-05 15:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tip. Actually I haven't noticed that it slows UF down. I got over 250 texture in there. I have the same texture lib on my son's comp. And he has only 640mr ram and 1.8 Ghz single core CPU and it works fine. For me I couldn't have textures in .upr files. It would just take too long to find them.
But if anybody got a slow UF it might be a good thing to do as you say.

Ah, not as bad as I thought then. That's good to know.

I don't think I could do it your way, don't you have to remember what you called everything? I categorize mine loosely into folders by type first e.g. "Marble", "Clouds", "fBM", "Geometrical" etc. Many of these types have multiple .uprs inside so "Geometrical" will have a .upr containing several "square" textures, another with "circles" and one with "lines/stripes" etc. Sometimes I have to get creative with the names and filing of textures that don't look like anything in particular but generally I can find what I want. Having thumbnails to look at helps visualise them too. I have almost 750 .uprs in my library, each one with anything from 1 - 20 textures in.

Each to his own I guess, but perhaps this mini discussion on how we differ with our organising will help others figure out what works best for them.

PS. 250 textures? Pfft! You amateur!

Jimpan1973 In reply to Velvet--Glove [2012-04-05 16:05:30 +0000 UTC]

Your idea about the thumbnails is really good. I wish I could get one by just highlighting the texture. And it's true. It's about finding the way that suits you the best. Now I need to run off and make textures. I have 750 more to do this evening before I can sleep.
