Just a warning, serious spoilers.

"I helped him with the horcruxes; driven by my own will and thirst for knowledge. I had to see if it were possible, all the research I'd done, all my travels...The possibility of eternal life has been sought after for hundreds of years and to think it was within my grasp! Now, I can't even bring myself to look in a mirror and look at the man who made it all possible. I knew I was putting myself in danger, but putting the rest of the world at stake was something I never bargained for."

When Edwin was young he excelled at Ancient Runes and went off to study forbidden magic. He was a few years ahead of Tom Riddle in school, but when Tom found out Edwin was the only one in the world who knew the most about horcruxes, he asked him to help. Edwin at first denied it, saying it was too dangerous and one way ticket to Hell. But Tom threatened to kill of Edwin's newly born half-brother Erwin if he didn't, and so he reluctantly helped. Erwin, spoiled rotten and blind by self indulgence, never once appreciated what Edwin did for him. He never understood the real danger he'd been in. And so later Edwin convinced himself he didn't do it for his baby brother, he did it because he was too thirsty for the knowledge and the power. For a Slytherin at heart he didn't want to appear vulnerable about his family, and decided his pride was a better excuse.
After the births of Clemence and Clarice, and the death of his daughter Ersilia, he finally came to terms with himself that he'd doomed them all. He couldn't stand to see his children live in such a world, and so secretly aided the other side against Voldemort while still keeping himself a successful follower. As Voldemort's first and foremost Death Eater, Edwin is probably the most valuable to the Dark Lord due to his knowledge of the horcruxes and various other dark magic. Voldemort secretly harnesses a fear that Edwin perhaps knows about things he doesn't share regarding the magic they so closely worked together on, and therefor treats Edwin almost as an equal, for he is too valuable to kill off.

Edwin Snodgrass is one of my Harry Potter fancharacters, and probably one of my most favorite characters of all time. LOL It was never particularly clear just HOW Voldemort worked out his situation with the horcruxes, so I decided to take certain liberties in the matter. c:
