Probably because the makers of the mainstream games you mention are still in business, whereas most companies that made games during the NES and SNES era are either gone or vastly different now.

Nintendo (i'm not about consoles now, about games) is very good economic policy, hence goes on.

Yeah, they are fun games, just very frustrating at some parts. By the time I get to the Snake Pit, I'd say the fun has decreased quite a bit :\

Heh, yeah that's how it always was with me and games like Ghouls N' Ghosts or Castlevania! Playing them now, I realize I probably only beat the first stages a handful of times as a kid! Still, I've got nothing but good memories, lol.

Good question... I guess he's actually brown in the games, but I wanted the toads to look a little more colorful here, in keeping with Rare's recent stuff. At the time I thought it was a subtle change, but looking at it now, its a pretty drastically different color, isn't it? Oh well.
I never played the Gameboy port, although my personal best in the NES game is level 7. As far as the SNES game goes, I've once gotten to the fight with the Dark Queen, although usually I end up around either the Snake Pit or Clinger Winger.
Unbelievably hard games, all of them!
