Shattered Star 5 Into The Nightmare Rift
They were hidden among the rocks atop a wooded hill overlooking the site. Koriah had led them without hesitation to this perfect vantage point. Below them was GuiltSpur, without a doubt. Although she had never seen it before, Carandas recognized the spire, which rose hundreds of feet into the air like an accusing finger pointing to the sky. Its color and appearance, of rock and bluish-green metal, matched in every way what she had read. It was impossible for there to be two similar places in this world.
The monolith was near a cliff of magmatic rock, at the bottom of an excavation certainly dug to clear it. The gully and the vegetation indicated however that the excavation work was not recent, except for a mass of rock debris which seemed much fresher.
Most importantly, there was a primitive, sturdy palisade and two tall wooden towers that blocked the access to the huge gate that allowed passage to the site from the plateau. In the center, a vast two-story building on the scale of the giants, also made of wood but without any windows, stood a few dozen steps from the Spur itself. Several giants seemed to be working to clear it, while four others stood guard in the two towers flanking the door, and three giants were stationed near large ballistas pointed at the entrance, in case it was forced. Mirixiana turned to Koriah.
"I take it that all this was not so on your last visit?"
"Indeed," the half-Elf replied. "Except for the excavation site, of course. All sorts of creatures and organizations have been coming here to dig for centuries. The Pathfinders are hardly the only ones interested, or the first. But there wasn't a stockade, and there wasn't this building."
