Description The title for this is taken from an amazing piece of music from one of the best movies I've ever seen: Cloud Atlas. Seriously, listen to this music.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcyxYT…

A few weeks ago, I lost someone extremely important to me. His name was Mr. John Schwarz. He was my art teacher, a friend, and one of the most important people I've ever met.

He taught me absolutely everything I know. He opened my mind in so many different ways I can't even describe it. He was one of the most creative people I've met, and he always guided me and encouraged me during my school years. The man was like a second father to me, and I felt that I had to draw something in honor of his life.

I don't think I did him justice. I poured my heart into this drawing more than I have any drawing in a long, long time. And yet ironically, I think this is the least creative thing I've done in a while (which is really quite an accomplishment). Literally everything in this drawing is either something I've drawn before or something that's been seen a million times somewhere else. It's sloppy, underdeveloped, and forgettable. I feel like the description I'm writing right now is better than this drawing. This is probably disgracing everything he taught me. So I might fix it or alter it later. But I had to draw something.

I wanted the world below to be dark, horrid, and haunting, and the world above to be really peaceful and wonderful, so that the picture was totally divided in half. The reason for this was because he didn't just die of age; he had cancer for a while. I also wanted anything flat, 2-D and black to represent something eternal and spiritual (the angels, the arms of the dadaism mountain, and the artwork inside the tears). I also wanted the streams from his body to go through a door and up to heaven, so that made it easy to pick the title.

Mr. Schwarz was a Christian, and this is the type of family I was raised in too. I can only hope that he was right, and that someday I get to see him again.

Wow, thank you. I'm flattered.
I really wish I'd had a better scanner back when I first drew this thing. As it is, it looks sort of blown out and grainy. :/

Looks good from my end. You have the benefit of being familiar with the original, so you can easily spot where your scanner might be lacking.

I'll probably have to replace my own scanner soon, it's got a couple of dead pixels and likes to leave artifacts in my work, which is maddening.Β

Haha yes, I suppose so.

Oh boy, that's rough. Sorry. Fortunately, I don't have that problem yet, but my scanner is kinda old, so it might be getting there.

My scanner tends to misbehave most noticeably in colour scan mode. It functions much better in black and white and gray-scale for whatever reason.

Interesting. Never run into that problem personally, but I've never really done traditional coloring, so I can't offer any perspective on it.

Eh...it's been a long time. I'm ok now. Thank you for your concern. Incidentally, this is now one of my favorite things I've ever drawn.

I think I have some ideas of why being a Christian isn't that popular nowadays.

Gynandromorph In reply to JNRedmon [2013-10-23 00:05:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I think because there's been so much Christian symbolism in so many art forms, I think people are growing tired of it, saying, "Give it a rest…" Did you know that there were some unauthorized video games based (loosely) upon stories from the Bible? Technically, these games were released illegally since they had no endorsement from Nintendo.

Oh. I thought you were going to say something else.

I guess I didn't really think about that aspect. Religious imagery has been a huge part of European and American art for a long time.

Yeah, I did! I watch Angry Video Game more often than I should. Those are hilarious.

Say, would you ever draw Vladimir Lenin riding a red Yoshi or a choir of Yoshies (perhaps with several other characters from Yoshi's Island) singing the Hymn of the Soviet Union / Anthem of the Russian Federation?

I personally do believe, there to be 'energy' or ethereal energy which is passed on after we cease to exist. Buddhism/Shintoism is what I can relate to the most...the energy and positive energy in Love. I don't think this is eerie, but enlightening to me when I view this. Looks great !Β

I think it's a brilliant piece of art and a worthy tribute, you did a great job on his face and I love it, as always, how well you succeeded in blending together so many different elements and areas while still making it feel like one piece.

You might think you failed but I think he'd be very proud of you if he could see this. I absolutely love the face in the sky and how it looks almost like something sacred. And the contrast between bottom and top is wonderful. The ground looks like an extremely scary wasteland; the feel almost reminds me of Kentarou Miura and trust me, he's a genius.
