Description
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.Ye olde (not-quite) standarde griffone, inspired by the colours of ornate eagles. The art director really wanted anything but the classic bald eagle-headed griffon, so I picked something with a bit more of an exotic colouration. I originally replaced the leonine tail entirely with large fanning tail feathers, but the director preferred something more catlike, so I compromised :V
Also, I understand why artists do it, especially in cases where the entire animal must be clearly visible, but I really like to avoid "winged animal stands there with wings half-folded" if I can - coming up with various mid-air poses where the wingspan doesn't dwarf the body is tough after a while >_O

I also love the idea that the tail is both the lion and the bird combined. I hate when it’s just one or the other. So creative.

Gryphons are really nice creatures, and there are so many more possibilities, as most ever see. once did a "gryphon challenge" ( gaiasangel.deviantart.com/gall… ) and combined many many creatures to griffons with stunning results.
I absolutely like the combined tails since the feathers are essential to navigate in midair. Also the colors are absolutely nice!

Haha, yes! I've seen them :3 And yes, I know about the necessity of tail feathers in real life flight, which is why I like including them if I can

Gorgeous colours! Looks like you caught him either during a landing approach, or while hovering like a Kite hunting for prey over a grassy field.
