Description

Another piece commissioned by Peri Akman for their story Grimoire's Soul, set in the dystopian urban fantasy world of Lystrata. The story follows the fish out of water adventures of inept magician Ceyda Lucrece in the modern oceanic city known as the Atrium. The Atrium is a bright, vibrant cosmopolitan megacity, founded for diplomats and frequented by tourists.

About the Commission

This is a waterfront scene. Visible from the boardwalk on the viewer's side is a large, colorful cityscape, bordered by an above-ground monorail. The aesthetic of the city is based on two architectural styles, Art Deco and Neo-Andean . Most of the buildings are either primarily one or the other, but I tried combining architectural elements whenever I could. Urban flora and green walls added a seemingly utopian solarpunk touch. The monorail is based on the trains in the Bay Area Rapid Transit system in San Francisco. The purple potted plant in the front is based on the plants my mother grows in her front yard.

This is my first landscape and cityscape done in Clip Studio Paint and is my most complex urban cityscape to date.  The visual style is a variation of the vector-esque art style I used for this image . The image uses multiple layers of buildings, many of which were individually designed to create the commissioner's desired urban aesthetic. Actual perspective was used in this image, though not all buildings face the right way to make this visually apparent. The vanishing point is somewhere in the center, and was made possible through CSP's perspective tool (which is honestly kind of new for me). This is also the first time that I relied on a clear, cloudless sky; this was an active choice as I did not want the image to look too busy. The sky was made possible through a gradient.

I added a lot of tiny details over the opposite bank, including wacky advertisements based on in-universe brands and culture.
