It's looks to be a White Winged Crossbill which gets about 6-6 3/4(15.2-17.1 cm). It has crossed mandibles. But yours has a longer tail which makes me think it might be a Pine Grosbeak. There chunker an taller though. I'm leaning to the first. Which tends to migrate sometimes as far south as N.C. The Pine Grosbeak tends to go a litte southwest to Kansas.

Thank you for the beautiful picture. An your welcome for the research. You were lucky to get a photo of him. It said that is was rare for them to migrate that way,especially alone. They tend to flock.
