I have been lost in this piece for some time now. The title is very interesting. I guess it brings out the constraints of life in me. The feeling of wanting to fly out of my skin and just break every rule of imagination just to try to feel......free.....for a moment. Thanks, I needed that!!! Even though my flights of fancy always end, I guess it isn't such horrible thing! You moved me with this! Very deep perspective work. I see why it took so long to create.

Thanks, I appreciate your interest in this. Your take on it is in tune with my ideas, and in part why I titled it this, although I had some other possible titles as well (Karmic crucifiction and a couple of others). Obviously, the stretching out of the arms or tentacles or whatever they are represent the idea of reaching outward, expanding one's self, but, they are locked in place. However, with the right combination, escape, mutation, etc. is possible and the organic potential can be realized, or not. You never know.
I noticed that many of your titles are similar or along the same lines as mine! Cool.
Thanks for your comments....

Joe, as always your work has impressed everyone who sees it! Your attention to minute detail is topped only by your mastery of contrast and tonal values. This work has such depth to it that it's easy to jump into it and become lost.

joe my friend, this is wonderful as always...how do you manage to infuse the colors in there? what board did you use...i was doing some experiments based on your compositional watercolors and i didnt like the results i was after...or maybe it was my watercolors, what brand do you use my friend?
i know that you first apply colors but surely you must have thought over the composition huh? pencil first?

It is on a professional grade cold press illustration board, which has some pretty good tooth. I like this grade of board because it is thick and can take repeated washes. I don't remember what brand of watercolor off hand, but it is in pans and is transparent, rather than opaque. As you mentioned, I do the paint first. I did not use any pencil except to mark the outer border (edge of drawing) and to mark a mark in the center. The transparent watercolor was built in many layers, then I started building up more tone with a thin tipped rapidograph pen by stippling and crosshatching. After I had a good start, I put down some more watercolor for tone, and then more ink. I don't think about composition too much. I have only a very general idea, then do that, then add something else if I think I need to.

JoeMacGown In reply to gloriagypsy [2009-05-07 19:10:59 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure how long. I started it last fall and have been working on it here and there. A long time for sure. Just the watercolor part took forever because of the many wash layers. The ink took a long time too, because of the fine tipped pen, plus, in order not to clog up my pen with paint, I can barely skim the surface of the drawing board.
