I just wish the Cougars stood with the Mustangs... the Firebird stood with the Camaro until his death.

You're right! But the Cougar's body styles changed too quickly. I think Ford was sort of Biased at times when it came to Mercury.

Possibly. Mustangs sold a lot more because they were cheaper but Cougars were a bigger, better car.

Indeed. Though, both were pony cars. Well, for the cougar at least the first 2 generations.
