I'm not so sure; some properties are well past the limit for public domain and yet are still under copyright, but really I wouldn't be surprised if Felix got into that at some point. Seems like he's been underused these past few years and if anyone can bring him back into the spotlight via public domain that might do him some good.

Sassy art like this is great to see on here; the picture is set up so that you see Felix himself first and foremost and that's always a good thing when doing artwork like this. Public or private he still has adventures awaiting him

It is great to see you have did your own take on Felix the Cat,since you managed to capture him in your original art style,Also,Felix's design is basically a fused version of his classic 1919 design and his late 50's cartoon design with Felix mataining the original horseshoe pupils from the infamous 1994 cartoon"The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat". It looks like Felix's expression seems worried and serious since he's worried that he public domain and he's manages to look and ask the viewer if he is PD right now. Good Job Drawing Felix For The First Time, JW

The answer is yes BUT like Sherlock Holmes before him © squatters have been pretending they own him by abusing trademark.

Hell the purported owners even threatened to sue Wikipedia & they shot back with, first were using a public domain image, second were not selling any merch. They backed off immediately.

So it's not impossible if everyone starts using him at once!

I would love to see Dreamworks Animation give him a proper revival to be a mix of Harvey Street Kids and the original Felix the Cat.

and have Felix be voiced by either a child actor like in the 1930 shorts or either Nancy Cartwright, Stephanie Nadolny, or Zach Callison to have it match that of the voice from the Twisted Tales

Yes, Felix is public domain (and has been for decades).

Just remember that if you do anything commercially with Felix, you have to only base it on and use details from Felix cartoons that are public domain.  So if there's a detail that comes from a cartoon from more recently, like the 40s or something, that's still copyrighted and you can get in trouble.  But as long as you're basing the work on Felix's cartoons from 1919 to 1923 you should be fine.

It's just like with Sherlock Holmes.  Sherlock is also public domain, but some of the stories were published later than 1923 so anything from those stories are still under copyright and cannot be used.  But the actual characters of Sherlock and Watson are public domain.

AKGamer99 [2019-01-07 00:54:28 +0000 UTC]

what does it mean if something is "public domain"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Gralegio In reply to AKGamer99 [2019-01-07 01:07:31 +0000 UTC]

It means a story/song/artwork/movie/etc. no longer has an owner and is now public, it is owned by everyone and is free for everyone to use.  Robin Hood, for example, is in the public domain:  you don't have to pay anyone to make a Robin Hood movie or publish a Robin Hood book, because no one owns the character anymore.

It's a feature of the U.S. (and most countries') Constitution that people are only allowed to own a copyright over a book/movie/etc. for a limited period of time, after which it belongs to everyone so new generations of artists and writers can make new stories and art.  Until 1998, every January 1 all the works released in a particular year (that year it was stuff from 1922) became public domain.  But, with the copyright for Mickey Mouse coming up soon (he was supposed to become free-to-use for everyone in 2004), the Disney company lobbied the U.S. Congress and convinced them to pass a law freezing the public domain for 21 years.  That finally expired on January 1, 2019 so now everything released and published in 1923 is free - no one owns them anymore.

it means its free to use and you won't have to worry about lawsuits with copyright

Dang. I like your style though not everything translates well... You got Felix. Like damn. That’s... I can see you making Felix the cat instead of NSFW.

YOU could make and sell Felix the Cat comics.

Can you please not try to police what content a grown adult should and shouldn't draw? It's prudish, childish, and rude. That's his art style. That's how he draws. That's all there is to it.

Thanks.

TheLonePonyboy In reply to JitterbugJive [2019-01-07 04:50:15 +0000 UTC]

It is not my intention to police his work. God knows I am the LAST person to do that.

I just can not say his Felix the Cat is friggin AMAZING without running my mouth... Or fingers.

I'm not telling him to stop NSFW. I had more to say but it led nowhere. His Dianne is hotter than bacon and the green fursona from earlier... Where's her mouth? IDK. I'll shut up.

JitterbugJive In reply to TheLonePonyboy [2019-01-07 05:22:54 +0000 UTC]

there's just been a lot of people nagging him lately about how his NSFW art looks and how he's better off drawing SFW content as if he's only supposed to draw what they enjoy

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheLonePonyboy In reply to JitterbugJive [2019-01-07 14:35:32 +0000 UTC]

I was not aware of that.

All I can say is that his work is not bad and it is not getting worse. I like how he can handle body types so I doubt that's anyone's complaint.

JitterbugJive In reply to TheLonePonyboy [2019-01-07 17:15:39 +0000 UTC]

People have been complaining about some pretty ridiculous things, like one person recently was like "your thick line art doesn't work with NSFW because it makes the nipples look weird" and "you're better than this, I thought you were pure but now..." and yadda yadda

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheLonePonyboy In reply to JitterbugJive [2019-01-07 19:21:39 +0000 UTC]

He's been at it longer than I realized but I got over it after a minute.

They can continue to complain or stick with the part of Joey's work that is still around. I can say whatever. THEY can say whatever. But at the end of the day Joey has the final, more important say on what Joey should do.

A quick wikipedia search shows works as recent as 2004. I would say he is not public domain. However, that doesn't stop many people from selling fan created works on sites such as Red Bubble or For Fans By Fans.
