No false flattery from me! The drawing on this one is very successful, especially the foreground foliage and the cypresses (though they might be Lombardy poplars -- anyway, those tall, slender trees that look so very Mediterranean.) And the restricted palette is just right as well. -- 6oT

I like the way this image compares with some of your fairy tale ones. The softer colors and style you used here, really create a more calm, subtle feel that fits the scene, just as the vibrant colors and styles fit your fairy tale scenes.

Thanks for your kind comment. Choosing a color range to fit the image is always something to give careful thought to.

Agreed. Color choices can really make or break an image, and you're welcome.

I've been admiring this painting for over a month in my Message box, and thought I'd best get myself in gear and add it to my Fav's before the texture on the pot sloughs off . Too bad that prints can't retain the rough texture; I would like to be able to see the original. Love the colors and the peacefulness of this painting.

Ah ah, I think the texture on the pot is there for keeps.

I pleased to read that you like the picture, I think I did managed to convey something of the peacefulness of the place. The gardens are not very big but they are quite amazing, I'm sure you would love them.

Thanks for the fave and the nice comment Marylin.

How coincidental, when I ran a Google search for the Gardens, the first site I chose brought up the exact view that you drew (minus your beautiful pot and flowers, though!): [link]

When I worked in the Civic Center in Los Angeles, California, a lifetime ago, the middle area was filled with acres of flowers in brilliant colors along with a large fountain with "dancing" water. I used to walk there during lunch hour. I looked for photos so I could show you, but the flowers seem to be mostly gone, replaced predominantly by greenery. But the beautiful fountain, at least, is still there: [link]

I had to laugh, though, at the photographer's comment ("a dry fountain--quite sad") at the Hall of Records where I worked: [link] Little does he know that the pool was dry even when I worked there all those years ago because (1) the pool leaked into the brand new building--the pool was directly over the area in which I worked and we had to put out pans to catch the water coming through the ceiling and (2) the gorgeous mosaic of the map of Los Angeles County, a small portion of which you can see in the corner of the photo, was designed to have water flowing down through channels simulating the public water circulating through the county; but the artist forgot that water takes the quickest and easiest way downhill and simply flowed in a waterfall down over the mosaic covering it with white mineral deposits, so they shut it off . Ah, great memories!

I had to crouch down to get that plant and pot in the picture. I often like to take that child's eye view, I feel part of the environment that way, and not just a spectator.

That fountain in Los Angeles is very impressive but it's a shame about the flowers no longer being there.
By contrast the dry fountain is like some kind of sad metaphor, and enough to make one shed a tear for it.

I suppose the thought to take away from your tale about the mosaic is "Never think you can control nature, you're just gong to end up standing in a puddle."

Beautiful work on these last pieces, John that texture sounds like gesso to me (is it called that way over there too?)
Anyways, great piece and fantastic execution ^___^

Thanks Javier. I've heard of jesso but I have no idea what it is.

Sir-Pumpkinhead In reply to JohnPatience [2010-07-20 03:05:54 +0000 UTC]

Gesso is a kind of "cement" that quickly dries and that is used for laying out textures or a first layer for the media (oil or acrylic) to be absorbed. Doesn't work with watercolor or gouache very well, I'm afraid

JohnPatience In reply to Sir-Pumpkinhead [2010-07-24 17:16:14 +0000 UTC]

Sounds very much like the same stuff, I should have gessoed as much.

Oh, I do love the textures in that urn.

How does this acrylic texture work? Is it applied prior to painting or after - or does it have its own colours?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnPatience In reply to Himmapaan [2010-07-13 09:01:35 +0000 UTC]

This kind of thing is a controlled accident but I'll take the credit anyway.

I apply, it let it dry, then float the ink over the surface. There may well be other ways.
