It's a combination of different painting techniques and the blending of the right colors. Beyond that, it's just experience from so many hours behind a brush

how i do a paint job like that starts with an all over coat of matte/flat black, and then i use a rag and some metallic paint and i wipe that on by hand. i can make it look more aged by using less metallic

Ya, rub and buff can work well, but it's hard to control. Its the reason I use a brush instead. Do you have any photos of your work up?
