Description Shingo is a waitress at a Ninja Cafe in dreamland; it is an establishment that caters to the unconscious otaku. She is not actually a ninja. The same applies to all of her coworkers (except for two, who really are ninjas, but nobody knows about it).

In this scene, Shingo is getting ready to go home, as the sun is rising and her shift is ending. She commutes by Amano fish.

Tenchou (her boss) is pleading with her to stay a little longer because it's just about time for the college students to be going to sleep and she is popular with that demographic.

Papaya (the chef/baker) wants her to take some oily bread with her because it's about to go bad and he'd rather give spoiling food to his coworkers than throw it away. A true gentleman.

Daimonji (the bouncer) is an enigma. He's trying to say something, but nobody can quite understand him. It could be poetry, or it could be profanity. Or it could be both.

---

So, why did I draw this?

While listening to some chiptunes on Youtube, I saw this in the related videos and was like

"Whoah, what is that?"

Turns out it wasn't actually anything in particular , but it at least made for an interesting could be picture, so I DID IT, and it was FUN.

Incidentally, do any of you artists out there know the term for extracting a picture from a thing by looking at it even though the picture wasn't really supposed to be there ? I can't figure out the Google search terms for this. (EDIT: the best suggestion so far has been "Pareidolia ;" not exactly the thing I was trying to describe, but close enough!)

I do that "Thing" all the time! I tried pointing out the dragon in the ceiling tile at home and I just get funny looks.

Nice to know it's a thing and not just me going bonkers!

Very beautiful work by the way.

I was going to point out that it looks pretty much exactly like the album-cover at first glance but then I realized that was your intention all along.
You cunning rascal.

I love that you take indistinct shapes you glimpsed somewhere random, and turn it into something distinctly random. With a backstory that makes little sense, yet it's entertaining.

THEY MUST BE RELATED SOMEHOW.

"extracting a picture from a thing by looking at it even though the picture wasn't really supposed to be there" I once made up a species by doing that.
Because when you wake up in the morning and see that a kangaroo rat with big pointy ears has been watching you sleep from the logo of the newspaper hanging on your wall.... Well, actually I don't know what that means. Aside from that you may want to consider seeing a psychiatrist.

It's very possible that just simply isn't a word for what you're trying to describe. I know the term for the thing that "extract a picture" from at least, it's called a "simulacrum".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnSu In reply to KirbyGotenksabsorbed [2012-12-09 07:19:20 +0000 UTC]

It's very likely that that is the case.

I don't even know why I thought there was a word for it to begin with.

I love this. Having the colorful characters on the plain white background makes for a great look. Definitely going to buy a print of this once I have money for such things.

I think I need to stop trying to draw whole stories out, making "plans" for comics and such. I should try what you do, just drawing whatever you feel like. If that's what you do and all.

John Su, you're awesome.

If she'd serve me at that dream cafe, I'd tip her 50% and tell her boss to pay her extra! She's a cutie!!!! But then that's why she needs that kama I guess.....to fight off the Otakus!!!! By the way, what are those pinky-white things in Papaya's backpack? They look like peaches or something.

Actually Pareidolia is only the clinical definition. Another term for this is called "Matrixing" where your brain makes an image out of features to create something that isn't really there. It is how many people believe they see ghosts in photos and videos that are in fact non-paranormal phenomenon that can be explained. There are lots of youtube videos that show this. This can be undone by making the view aware of the actual images features alone and then having them look at all those features together to see where the illusion of an image came from.........however if YOU have been, or are experiencing this John it could mean you're eating too much of Papaya's oily bread! It maybe having that affect on you!

Oily bread huh? Yeah.....nothnxbai!!!!!!!

JohnSu In reply to Demosthenes-101 [2012-12-09 04:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are taro buns made in the form of peaches.
He calls them "Momotaro."

There is a rare chance you will bite into one of these and find a baby inside.
You then wake up in a cold sweat, trying to remember what happened.

Oh so he's a nightmare chef in the dream cafe then? Papaya sure is a sadistic chef! I suppose this is a nod to the classic Peach Boy story then......but made out of taro?????
