My Week 4 tryout piece for The Line It Is Drawn over at Comics Should Be Good!The theme this week was: "Comic book characters facing off against villains they've never fought before." The Twitter suggestion for the theme that caught my fancy was Batman vs. Mysterio. I really liked this idea because Mysterio could VERY easily be a real Batman villain (Heck, 70s Bat-villain the Spook basically IS Mysterio). He even has the same green & purple color scheme as the Joker, the Riddler and Catwoman!
The fun part of this one was attempting to draw a Steve Ditko-esque Mysterio and a Marshall Rogers-esque Batman. I even managed to sneak in one of those Ditkoesque water towers that are all over the early issues of Spider-Man. I'm particularly happy with how the colors on this one turned out. Thanks to my buddy Loston Wallace for some good advice on the colors!

Splendid artwork. And, yeah, I would say Bats would be MORE THAN a match for Mysterio. Considering how many in his rogue's gallery use similar methods of operations (including the Scarecrow), Batman would be REALLY well-equipped for fighting him.

Batman would sic Spellbinder on Mysterio and let them try to villainously out-villusion other whilst he goes and gets himself some popcorn

Spellbinder will never seriously be able to challenge Batman or Mysterio until he gets a decent costume. MAN that thing is an eyesore!

This is so fantastic! I could see this happening in a comic book. I think Batman could defeat Mysterio.

Yeah, it's fun to imagine. I think it'd be interesting to see Batman fight a lot of Spider-Man's foes, and vice versa.

Aw man, that looks nuts! I would love to see that fight actually. Ive always liked Mysterio as a villain who was so unique and interesting. I personality think the character was underused in the Spiderman comics, but thats just me.

Yeah, Mysterio gets a bum rap, IMO. He's got a great, unique look and a cool gimmick.

Totally! It sucked when he "died" in the Daredevil comic from poisonous gas and now they want to put some teleporting mutant in the role? That ruins the mystery of how he always gets away imo.

Oh, is somebody else besides Quentin Beck Mysterio now? I didn't know that. I knew that Kevin Smith killed him off in Daredevil in a rehash of Kraven the Hunter's suicide, but I think that was almost immediately undone by another writer (John Byrne, maybe? I can't remember for sure).

Apparently there have been two other guys taking the mantle of Mysterio with the teleporting mutant being the one I saw being number 3. And apparently, the suicide was legit but then Beck was sent back from Hell (because when you take your own life its an auto trip down under) by his "superiors" to maintain a cosmic balance.
Man, the weird shit this writers come up with. XD

I wish writers put that much effort into coming up with cool schemes for Mysterio.

You know, I think thats the crux of the matter. Mysterio has a unique look, a unique set of skills, and works via psychological means. A manipulator in other words. And there is only so many ways you can work that angle that the editors will allow to pass on paper.
Now you or me, we could come up with a billion ways for Mysterio to have kick ass story plots. But if the editors say no, then it doesnt get printed. XP

I always wanted to see the Hulk push down on Mysterio's helmet and see a die rolling around inside his head like with the Milton Bradley POP-O-MATIC TROUBLE board game.

i see ditko in your mysterio...but i see more of a byrnes influence in batman...might be me...haven't seen byrne's work in years!

I grew up loving John Byrne's artwork, so it's not surprising that you can see his influence in my art style. That guy's pretty ingrained in me!
