Whenever I scroll through my Instagram feed, I see dozens of incredible pieces of art that were just uploaded. I take a few seconds to marvel at each one of them, leave a like or comment here and there, close the app - and all too often feel like a complete failure.

Why you ask? Well, because the last time I uploaded a new piece was a couple of weeks ago and I wasn’t even that satisfied with it. Yet here are all these incredibly talented artists and they seem to be able to come up with amazing new ideas every day.

Does that sound familiar to you? Then let me tell you something: Did you know that the most famous painting in history, the Mona Lisa, took four years to be finished? Da Vinci kept the painting hidden from the public for another three years. So from conception to its publication seven entire years passed!

While social media has made it possible for us artists to have our creations be seen by people from all over the world, it has also influenced the way we view our craft. Instead of looking at each creation as a timeless piece of art birthed from our imagination and withstanding the sting of time, we tend to see it as a product that is to be consumed in the blink of an eye. A mere flicker on someone‘s Instagram feed.

My friend AlectorFencer pointed this out in a recent Tweet and it inspired me to create this little comic. I want to remind all of us, me included, that art is allowed to take time and that everyone has a different pace. We all go through phases when new ideas seem to be flowing out of our hands, but we also have days, weeks or even years we just don’t feel that inspired. And that is ok! This is not a race. It‘s not about who can finish the most pieces a year or accumulate the most likes on a post. Art is simply an expression of our inner lives. A way to communicate feelings and concepts that can’t be put into words.

If you have struggled with this, I want to invite you to be a little kinder to yourself. You‘re the only person on this planet that can create the art you put out. Your work is indeed timeless and one-of-a-kind.

Art has no expiration date.
