You never parry edge-to-edge, especially with thin, single-bladed swords like that.

It's a block, not a parry. While you don't want to meet edge-to-edge as it permanently puts nicks in the blade , it's not always optional when your opponent isn't sparring. If you've got to bring the blade up to block two downward strikes like the panel above, you may not have time to turn your blade around all the way to block with the back, and you certainly don't want to take two downward strikes at the same time against the flat of the blade (keep in mind, she has a thin katana, not a thicker European blade). Many historical blades, even those known to have been owned by respected swordsmen of their day, have nicks in the blade because the wielder was more concerned about his life than the longevity of the blade - which, given the fragments in the panel also seems to be what she's done.
