Birthday pic for my Mum
I always ask her what she'd like me to draw. This year she said "Fairground Fairy" and told me to draw the first thing that brought to mind.
At first I thought "Goldfish", and was going to draw a little mermaid in a bag, alongside some actual fish, but the struck me as kinda melancholy.
I liked the aquatic angle, though, so the mermaid went from prize to star attraction

What if he managed to communicate that there was a river nearby the carnival that led to the ocean so she could escape, and when he was tearfully saying goodbye she said "wait...no, come with me."

Not if she was only in it long enough to get to the ocean. Though honestly I've never heard that mers were subject to the fresh/salt restriction.
And there are a handful of marine lifeforms that can live in both; their body can adapt on the fly.
