"I love Hans Zimmer but, jeez, he can take his horns and shove them where the sun don't shine. His Man of Steel score is just limp in comparison."
Yes, overuse of the subwoofer ("THIS IS EXCITING! ARE YOU EXCITED YET?!") wasn't quite the same. Alternatively, the soundtrack was trying to make one feel like one was being punched by General Zod.

You're right, just thinking of that music makes me feel good. Additional comment: I measure super hero movies by what I call the Superman Moment. This goes back to the first Christopher Reeves movie. The scene with Lois Lane in the helicopter crashing and Superman coming to her rescue. . . . .made me want to jump up and holler "Yeah mofos!! That's Superman!!" or something to that effect. Man of Steel did not have that. However, I did appreciate seeing the train locomotive being tossed. . . . .

I will have to agree with you there Jolly....
Although Han's MOS theme was good for that movie...
Nothing. And I mean NOTHING will ever replace the beauty and majesty of John Williams's masterpiece.
To this day this piece still maintains it's magic as it did when it was first composed and conducted back in 1979
when we first heard it on the movie screen it's riveting score sent us into the movie.
One of my favorite part of the piece is when the actual music if you listen close enough will actually say the word "Superman."
it's a piece that I will always enjoy

I'll be honest it's a pity they probably won't ask you to work on superman because this is a fantastic design.
One of the things I hate most about the "Batman Profit Model" ("Everyone loves Batman, we make money by making everyone Batman, GENIUS!") is it undermines the characters and superman suffered most from this. The whole point of making a movie with both is to show how the two of them are opposites that work well off each other (see Batman/Superman: Public Enemies) and the more interesting side that Superman, who is unto a god powerwise, is actually more human than the guy who has no superpowers whatsoever. This pic is the superman we know and love, who pretty much decided to use his incredible powers to help others for absolutely no reason other than it was simply what he felt was the right thing to do. I don't mind sometimes seeing Superman get a little worn down by being the paragon of virtue all the time but it shouldn't be his entire character. I'll be honest, Henry Cavill could give a good performance IF the writing was up to scratch. I mean I know people hate Superman Returns (yes it wasn't a good movie I will admit that) but it at least FELT like a superman movie (and was nowhere near as bad as Quest for Peace).
I'm ranting... point iis this is a fantastic piece.

Classic pre 52 Superman is back in the new DC You post Convergence Event thingy Post Flashpoint. Along with his wife Lois Lane and his child (who was born during the Convergence event thingy). He's existing in the same planet/universe as the new 52 Superman who's currently semi depowered and who's secret identity has been outed by new 52 Lois Lane due to "reasons." And all of this sounds convoluted and unnecessarily complicated. Yay DC comics.

All others have "Waaaaa Booo Hooo I'm sooooooo lonely because I'm deferent" issues. Never mind the fact they have EVERY SUPERPOWER THAT WAS EVER COOL. Its all pouty face and "feelings" stuff for the ladies. Because someone once said its all just a love story between Him and Lois. You know, that girl that never really does anything, except make him feel even worse about something? That one.

I think it would be difficult for any composer working in the entertainment industry that could do a better than John Williams.
However, that said, James Horner's work in Apollo 13 still sends shivers in my spine, and there are some excellent tracks in the Elder Scrolls series, composed by Jeremy Soule.

As much as I dislike those Superman films, the John Williams theme is a classic and really does capture who Superman is. But still my favorite theme is the animated version, which does take cues from the John Williams one.

My late father introduced me to Superman through the first Christopher Reeve movie when I was about five. Ever since then, I've seen my father as my personal Superman. They both believed in fighting the good fight (My father served in the Coast Guard and Navy before I was born), didn't believe in ever given up hope no matter how bleak things looked. Sadly, my father was taken by cancer, but I can imagine that he and Mr. Reeve are having a good time in the after life. About John Williams' Superman theme, every time I hear it, I tear up a little because of my association of my father and Superman. Something I'm not ashamed to admit.

I like your interpretation of Superman, he does seem like a man who is a a bit set in his old ways but also is kind and willing to listen to another's views on any situation. He does feel a bit dated now, but in a good way that reminds you that not everything has to be dark and gritty and that there can be colour's that are bright.

Superman is the greatest. I honestly think he has the potential to be great for the modern age; I believe he, his friends, his villains, his lore deserve a lot more than some writers and the public have been giving them. They're grossly underrated a lot. It deserves much, much better. Because he's more than a character. He's an icon.

The general joy and wit Christopher Reeve brought to the role IS Superman for me, not to mention that I still get teary eyed at that inspiring brass in Williams's theme. Tim Daly did a great job channeling that in the WB animated works, and Dean Cain didn't do too shabby either. Unfortunately, Supes needs good writers behind him or he falls flat.

"Pretty sure Superman was the first superhero I ever saw."Superman was the first superhero anyone ever saw. When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the Man of Steel in 1938 (yeah, kiddies, before you were born, before your parents were born), there was no prototype or template. He was unique, the model for all those who came later.

Um, not exactly. The original Superman creators drew heavily from Doc Savage. Silly as that seems today. And various other pulp characters from the 20's and 30's.
Also, originally he couldn't fly. He could just jump really far, exactly like John Carter in "A Princess of Mars" and the other Barsoom books. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster really borrowed from a lot of popular pulp media for their creation.
And even at that, Hercules was a further influence, going back millennia.

perfesser-bear In reply to tarmaque [2015-09-07 06:01:22 +0000 UTC]
Doc Savage was not a superhero. While he did probably supply Clark Kent's first name and moral compass, Savage did not have any one ability outside of real-world human possibility. Hercules was a demigod; they fall into another category.

I miss the old Superman, the classic one by Siegel & Shuster. Yes, Superman was powerful, but he didn't always go toe-to-toe with super villains and intergalactic overlords-the majority of the time he was helping normal citizens, sometimes by impersonating them or giving their tormentors a piece of their own medicine!
Even with the addition of super villains to punch, in my opinion there are too many alien villains. There's nothing wrong with having a handful to appear on occasion, like Brainiac, Lobo, Darkseid and General Zod, but nowadays he spends a lot of time in space (Isn't that Green Lantern's job?). I prefer the human villains that manage to step up to fight Superman, like Lex Luthor, Metallo, Livewire, Parasite, Toyman, etc.

Every time I hear the Williams theme I flash back to when I was a kid and the local schoolyard doubled as a tennis court during the summer. One night Christopher Reeve was playing tennis there for whatever reason... this was right after Superman had come out, and my little sister (4) was absolutely gobsmacked at the Man of Steel before her eyes. Reeve saw this, grinned and winked at her. So awesomely cool.
