not a spitfire, but from the looks of it, it looks like a corsair

Hello again Jonathan. Thanks again for your atmospheric rendering of these Spitfire MK XIs in American markings. I know that these existed in reality as my father piloted both of them. As previously noted his friend Lt Charles JJ Goffin was KIA in MB 952 on September 8, 1944 while on his 33rd mission. He was mapping the Siegfried Line and was intercepted by fighters or flak. This heroic Belgian pilot attempted to land on a country road near Reckange-les-Mersch but was engulfed in flames and did not survive.
All the best
Scott Blyth

really nice painting i have to say, and im a huge lover of the spit, but why is this in American colors, the spitfire was a British interceptor?

Looks good but not accurate. Sorry dude. Im a ww2 airplane historan and there was never a spit with a u.s. marking made. Good job though. Looks like a spit v3 or v2 mabye. Pre- war and first couple years...nice.

With US marking, which is unusual. I like the light bouncing off of the cockpit window, it's a very nice effect

Excellent painting Jonathan. These are Spit MK XIs from the 14th Squadron of the 7th PRG based at Mount Farm, Oxfordshire, UK. They were stripped of all excess weight for speed and distance. The pilots flew "alone and unarmed." The great Belgian pilot Charles JJ Goffin was killed in action flying MB 952 near Mersch, Belgium on September 8, 1944.

There certainly were US-operated Spitfires, especially in the UK-based PRU, the Photo-Reconnaissance Unit. This pooled unarmed Spits in British and US markings under a common command and maintenance organisation, and the stereoscopic photographs they took were essential intelligence tools, seeing through camouflage to reveal targets such as the Tirpitz and the V-weapons.
The BBC produced an excellent documentary on the PRU, including interviews with British/Commonwealth and American pilots, one of whom flew down into a quarry in France to photograph a V2 launch installation at close range!
