Description Two P-47's attack a troop train somewhere in Germany during WW II. The German locomotive is a Series 55.

This composition is dedicated to 2nd Lt. Russell H. Oplinger of the 390th Fighter Squadron, 366th Fighter Group. Russ was a friend of my dad and I had the privilage of meeting him and being a friend. He graduated from our local H.S. in 1942. As a 20 yr.old 2nd Lt. he was flying P-47's during the fierce fighting of the Hurtgen Forrest.

BG consist of four layers of media. Mayyang skies and other various free landscape sites.

The P-47 gradually became the USAAF's best fighter-bomber, normally carrying 500 lb bombs, M8 4.5 in or 5 in High velocity aircraft rockets (HVARs, or Holy Moses). From the invasion of Europe on 6 June 1944 to VE day on 7 May 1945, the Thunderbolt units claimed destroyed: 86,000 railroad cars, 9,000 locomotives, 6,000 armoured fighting vehicles, and 68,000 trucks.

Its Digital Art, I have been involved with art when there were no computers.

But I think I have a feel with computer art's brushes and other techniques to produce the artwork that look likes oils and other media.

All my tools are free, I used GIMP and Paint.Net for this work.

Thanks for the feedback. It also helps to know your subjects and good research. I grew up around aircraft most of my life. My dad was a pilot in WW2 and met other pilots as stated above.

Astonishing, sincerly, Mark ! I see this painted classified in 'Digital Art' but it looks like oil paint. Is it an oil paint with a touch of software ? Cheers

The P-47 is about my favorite fighter of WWII, there were faster, and more agile aircraft, but non of them had the ruggedness, and sheer brawn of the P-47.

I'm definitely putting my Money on the "jugs" once they get set up for a better angle on that train it's rolling scrap.

Amazing creation!

Only a bit sad when thinking about the crew working on the trains who arent soldiers :/

Thank You.
The crews of these trains were vital to the war effort. I am sure that the sacrifices were high considering that the P-47's destroyed 9,000 locomotives.

Thanks John, appreciate it.

The more I read about the P-47, the more I realize how much destruction this aircraft did througout Europe. As someone said, it was the
A-10 of WW II.

I really think that the Republic P-47 (all final production models) is one of the unsung hero's of WWII; overshadowed by its allies; namely the North American P-51 Mustang and the Supermarine Spitfire.

zulumike In reply to Hoenn-Master [2012-11-18 04:12:22 +0000 UTC]

I agree, the more I read about it, I find how much it contributed in supporting ground troops.

Hoenn-Master In reply to zulumike [2012-11-18 04:19:18 +0000 UTC]

And what is the kicker, (in my mind at least) the P-47 was a much safer aircraft to fly than its counterparts, not just in the air, but also on takeoff and landing!

Perfect opportunity, disable the loco on a bridge! Block that track for days.

Like the prop-wash going through smoke effect, that's a tricky one.

Not True. Go to YouTube and watch actual footage of strafing trains. Mostly broadside from rear to front.
