Description These two dapper gentlemen are from my story in the upcoming "Haunted Mansion" comic, which Slave Labor Graphics is putting out this October.

Mr. Coats (left) and Mr. Davis (right) are the architects of Gracey Mansion and, because of greed, pride and devious plotting, also its first ghostly residents.

The characters are based on Claude Coats and Marc Davis, the imaginers that actually designed the Haunted Mansion attraction.

Pen and ink, with brown ink wash.

Thanks! It was a dream project for me, being a huge Disney fan in general and a Haunted Mansion fan in particular. (If you'd like to see the unpublished Ezra the Hitchhiking Ghost story I wrote (drawn by the awesome Jon Morris) you can see it here:Β inkeverywhere.com/hauntedmansi… )

what interesting to note is their rivalry in the comics was real in reality (Davis wanted scary yet funny, while Coats wanted only scary)

And I loved the fact that Davis looked so jolly and avuncular and Coats looked like an undertaker! They couldn't have been a better pair for an E.C. comics-inspired tale of rivalry!

Well, there's nothing like the Haunted Mansion to bring out the ol' creativity, as I'm sure you'll agree!

I like how you represented the two of them, as charicatures of Marc Davis & Claude Coats. Plus the different designs they had in their study were real clever.

Thanks, I'm a big fan of the behind-the-scenes making-of of things, so this was a perfect chance to not only play in the Mansion but pay tribute to the creators.

Wow! I was just browsing through the Haunted Mansion pics on DA and I found this! I bought the comic a few years ago, and I still love it! I was showing a friend of mine today and rereading it. Great work!

That's very kind of you to say. It was a delight to get to play in the mansion, one of my favorites attractions at Disneyland. I see that you're in California, if you're going to Comic Con, I'll be at the SLG booth, come by and say "Hi!"

Thank you very much. The residents of the Haunted Mansion, and all Disneyland really, are near and dear to me. It was an honor to get to work on the comic.

Thanks. That story took me as long as some full issues of my comics because I love the Haunted Manison and Disneyland so much (going there for my 40th birthday next month) and I wanted to fully pay tribute to the creators of such a spooktacular thing.

It took me actually awhile to read too. I had soo much fun lookin' at everyone's style of artwork and how simple some could be but give you the point or how some could be soooo detailed. The Haunted Mansion personally is the best ride out of the park. XD. Oh and Happy early berthdae to ya. I'm actually goin' in October with my mom. Just me and her=^.^= I always since I was little wanted to go to Disneyland on Halloween so my mom actually thought we should go and do it. Have you gone during Halloween?

JonBeanHastings In reply to WereAllMad [2007-07-10 00:02:33 +0000 UTC]

I've gone to Disneyland (or Disneyworld) on Halloween five times... mainly because it's my wedding anniversary and I asked my wife to marry me on Pirates of the Caribbean, so we kinda have a soft spot for the place. Also, riding Haunted Mansion on Halloween... super cool.

OO hey awesome. I read this comic when it first came out and it was among my favorite in the 1st issue. It's great to see you post on Deviantart! Are you doing any other stories in the HM comics?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JonBeanHastings In reply to Lunamis [2006-04-16 08:31:31 +0000 UTC]

I've got the back cover on issue three and another full story in issue four. I also wrote the Gus story in issue two (and will be doing the backstories of the other two hitchhikers in upcoming issues.)

Me loves the mansion! Woot!

Lunamis In reply to JonBeanHastings [2006-04-16 15:45:48 +0000 UTC]

It's great to hear there will be 4 issues at least! But they take so long to come out tsk SLG! Gus is my fav. hitchhiker so the story in the 2nd issue was well-recieved. Can't wait till the others and any more Mansion art you've got ^.^

JonBeanHastings In reply to Lunamis [2006-04-16 22:38:02 +0000 UTC]

We hope to just keep going and going. We're a little slow, what with at least a dozen different people working on the books (and, in many cases, their own at the same time). But, we're all fans of the ride and, for me, it's both a privilege and an honor to be associated, even peripherally, with the Mansion.

Lunamis In reply to JonBeanHastings [2006-04-18 02:04:07 +0000 UTC]

You all must have been excited when Disney announced the project then! I hope they give you free passes to enjoy the "inspiration" of the Mansion once in a while. I can imagine the timeframe is harder to accomplish with so many artists but what with all the talent and great stories I'll wait it out. :woot:

Ahh what oppurtunity! I hope one day to manage Animal Kingdom Lodge (ah but what is life w/out dreams?) and so free passes would be abundant. Do you go pretty often? A once a week HM run would be beyond magnificent ^.^

I really loved the "Blueprint for Murder" story. Kinda wish I could actually find volume 2 of the series, the Hot Topic near me still doesn't have it. Only reason I even set foot in there now.

Thanks, I've got another story, a story I wrote and a painting in issue three... it's all most and all-Bean, all the time issue.

You can always get a copy at SlaveLabor.com (and I just hear that Hot Topic will be carrying HM again.)

I read your story in the comic and I absolutely loved it! So now I'm hooked on collecting these comics, and I'm really looking forward to the next issues, especially with the Hitchhiking Ghosts (my favorite characters). Lovely work!

Thank you. Issue two is out now (with Gus's story). Issue three will have my Ezra story (with the wondrous Jon Morris again on art), Pickwick's story (the chandelier-swinging ghost) written and drawn by me and a painted pin-up of the Hitchhiking Ghosts (much like your "Grim Grinning Ghosts" portrait, actually).

I see you're up in SF. You should be sure to make it to APE ([link] ) in April, since many of the HM artists will be there.

JonBeanHastings In reply to skellingtongal [2005-11-28 18:12:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, she said, "Yes!" so that's a good thing. She's a redhead and just after the pirates at the bride auction chat, "We wants the redhead!" and I said, "I wants the redhead, too. Will you marry me?"

A few years later (waiting so Halloween was on a Friday so everyone could make it) we were married... dressed as pirates. [link]

oh thats cute good thing she said yes though, and having a wedding dressed as pirates... sounds like fun, I love it when they say "We wants the redhead!" Makes me feel proud to be a redhead (so sick of all the people saying blondes are better T_T) you are pretty creative when it comes to marriages though not too many people would think of that
