SHERLOCK HOLMES. Because I love him so....the git.
I did this on the back of an assignment, so the type on the other side shows through a bit.
I get these yearly Sherlock Holmes cravings and generally end up rereading the Conan Doyle corpus and compulsively watching the Jeremy Brett series.
...with regards to the upcoming movie, I have only this to say: if Robert Downey Jr pulls a Gerard Butler on this character, I'll commit hara-kiri.
May 2009: OK, I just saw the trailer for the new movie.
My prognosis: it's going to be an utterly heinous affair all around, if the slow-mo shirtless boxing is any indication.
BLECH.

Robert Downey Jr is not a Sherlock Holmes make. As bad as that sounds, I think you know what I mean and agree with me.

simply enchanting, the way your style captures an erratic overly compulsive and hyper deductive person is amazing especially "The Game is afoot!" that alone captures a wily and bold streak to an otherwise composed and calm person

Beautiful master work!!! A real feel of Brett in it. Canon Holmes is the greatest and RDJ can go away and snog his Watson. I agree with you that the music was good and the scenery was okay, but I miss some cerebral workout.

I gotta say, I love the 'I'm surrounded by imbiciles' one best. I've lost track of how many times I've thought/said this in my house alone. Your drawings are great.
Personally, I kind of liked the RDJ movie. Age-wise, considering the fact that Watson had not quite yet married Mary, he was about right. But way too short and scruffy. Jeremy Brett was the best Holmes ever, RDJ should have looked him up before attempting the part. Because Holmes boxes like a gentleman; in a bar in self-defense, and with his shirt ON (also his vest ;D).
But looking back, now that I've read the books, and seen all the Brett episodes, I can see why so many people don't like it. It really does step far out from cannon. Holmes never had to deal with anything so strange, and he would not have been making out with Irene Adler as soon as he had the time. And Watson never would have been so short with his Holmes. They were too close. Brothers to the end, those two. Especially in the Brett/Burke/Hardwicke version.
Though, I must say, the addition of Gladstone the bulldog was wonderful. He decided me on getting a bulldog as soon as I'm old enough to get my own place (is still a minor).
*sighs* Yeah, Jeremy Brett's death makes me sad somedays. Poor man. Rheumatic fever as a teen, his first marriage ended in divorce, his second wife, whom he really cared a lot about, died, and the bipolar thing. But still, I have to admire his strength. He deffinitely wasn't well by the end of the Holmes series, but he kept up with it, and smiled.
Would anyone think me crazy if I think I met his ghost once? I believe in ghosts, so I started talking to Mr. Brett, wondering if his spirit could hear me. I felt drawn to one corner of the living room, and when I held out my hand, I kid you not, it felt like someone took it like in a handshake.

Yeah, the new movie...great music, good atmosphere - but still, no thanks. Too much of the summer blockbuster, not enough brains.
I think my main beef was the ridiculous plot. I usually lean towards being faithful to the literature and as you say, it's a pretty far cry from anything that Conan Doyle would have penned. Maybe itβs a reflection of Doyleβs limitations as a writer, but I think that Holmes is simply better suited to the short-story format - a television series will almost always work better than a feature length film. Part of what made the stories delightful was their small scale, and the touches of subtle creepiness, like in βThe Copper Beechesβ or βThe Speckled Bandβ β those stories scared the bejeezus out of me when I was young. In Doyleβs hands, a false bell-rope and a mysterious whistle in the night is way more intriguing than Satanic rituals and cyanide plots. And when he did play around with the supernatural, like in Hound of the Baskervilles, the remote setting and small scale of the drama made it all the more spooky and atmospheric.
Da Vinci Code-esque conspiracies + Sherlock Holmes = not impressed.
And it goes without saying that while Holmes and Watson were fun, there really is no contest - Brett and Burke/Hardwicke permanently occupy first place in my heart.
Yes, you could really tell that Brett was pretty sick by the end of the series - he looked positively vampiric. Just goes to show how dedicated he was to the character.

Oh man, even seeing it a second time, I still think this is utterly gorgeous. Who doesn't love a brilliant, observant, cold, woman-distrusting, aquiline, gaunt, awesome piece of Creation?

Nope, I haven't. My gut wrenches every time I remotely hear word of it, and I tend to trust my gut on such matters... It u~sually ends up being right. 
...Sorry for the ramble. XD I'm still upset that Downey won a Golden Globe for it...Especially when someone like Jeremy Brett (who admittedly isn't my image of the canon in his portrayal but is still by a mile the best) barely got what he deserved for his.

Oh, Gerard Butler was the Scottish guy who played the Phantom in the "Phantom of the Opera" movie.
He took a character that was meant to be an elegant, brilliant, deformed madman and made him into a sort of growly rugged open-shirted type, who furthermore couldn't sing worth a damn, but he attracted a whole horde of fangirls.
From what I've seen and heard of the Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes, they're trying to make him rather less cerebral and more physical (not to mention SHIRTLESS) to appeal to a younger crowd.
Which just makes me sad.

Aaaaah!! I could hug you. I have been trying to draw a cartoon-Holmes for an eternity, it seems, and I can't get him quite right. But this is perfect!! I love the sharp, angular features and those lovely hooded eyes. It's exactly the way I'd imagine him looking if he were animated.
GASP! They should make an animated Sherlock Holmes movie. It would be SO much better than trying to find the right actors. And YOU should be the character designer.

Ooooh, yeah. Definitely a REAL Brit. Someone with a really versatile voice, who could do different accents; because obviously, Holmes loves putting on disguises. Gasp! Someone like... Gary Oldman???
I don't know who would be a good Watson, but I've always thought of Moriarty as having this sinister raspy voice. To me, Jeremy Irons comes instantly to mind. He has the best evil voice ever.
