Description Mustn't forget dear Watson.

Sort of based on David Burke, the first of the two Watsons who appeared alongside Jeremy Brett in the Granada series.

I really liked David Burke, I was confused when they changed actors. Great sketches!

Heh. I can definitely see David Burke in there. Hardwicke is my personal favorite though. It's a weird, hard to back up reason, but I think it's because he seems more convincingly doctor-ish to me, and I do love the relationship he and Brett established between the characters.
Anyhow, I love these drawings, and not to repeat everyone else, but that face at the bottom is just... lovely.

Haha, thanks!
My guess is that Holmes has just extrapolated what Watson had for breakfast from the contents of his sock drawer. Or something.

Adorable. Especially the one in the top right corner. Watson doesn't get nearly enough love. I realize I have no room talking, because I haven't drawn him yet either. For shame!

I love Burke. Hardwicke was good too but I wish Burke had stayed for another season at least.

Great tribute to Watson, I love his expression in the bottom one. And I agree with the other commenters, too often Watson gets shafted as the "bumbling sidekick" when actually he's a very smart man, it's just that Holmes is beyond genius and makes EVERYONE around him look kind of dumb. Also, Watson has good aim with a pistol.

He's really a darling of a man. Always game for an adventure! And much better with the ladies. And bowing to badly-disguised German royalty.

(OHMYGOD Scandal in Bohemia - the contrast between Watson's and Holmes' reaction to the king never, ever fails to crack me up.)

I like 'em both - Hardwicke was the first one I saw, but Burke grew on me too, especially after I saw the "Redheaded League" episode.

Watson=love. HIs expression on the botton is awesome XD

I personally prefer the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce versions, mostly because I grew up on them but I like how Burke plays a less dorky clueless Watson

I love Watson's expression. He's not a stupid man. But Sherlock Holmes can make that 'I don't ***ing believe it' face appear on the best of us. In modern terms, it would be sort of:

Watson: ZOMGWTF.

Holmes: Owned.

AdAbsurdum In reply to SilverBellsAbove [2009-03-17 23:13:20 +0000 UTC]

Pfffhaha! Quite right!

Poor Watson! I heartily disagree with the "bumbling sidekick" image. Anyone who can tote a revolver with such good-hearted zeal AND put up with a Holmes waxing supercilious is a keeper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverBellsAbove In reply to AdAbsurdum [2009-03-17 23:53:37 +0000 UTC]

You're telling me. The only reason he's sometimes portrayed as a bumbler is that he's the one telling the stories to us (Through Doyle, of course). And he is modest. Which means that he's deliberately vague on himself and tends to dwell more on Holmes because, after all, Holmes is the man.

It all boils down to Watson trying not to Mary Sue (Gary Stu) himself. So he seems a bungler at times only because Holmes almost *never* bungles and there's no one else to compare himself to. Except for maybe Lestrade, who is a bungler and pretty much exists to be bashed (poor Lestrade.)

Ah, well. Lestrade fails at getting pity anyway. Must have to do with that 'bungler' thing...

AdAbsurdum In reply to SilverBellsAbove [2009-03-18 06:23:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can't really dredge up any pity for Lestrade either, probably because, as you say, Doyle never develops him beyond the bashing-target stage.
I sort of wish he had.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverBellsAbove In reply to AdAbsurdum [2009-03-18 12:46:44 +0000 UTC]

Come to think of it, Lestrade probably has plenty of adventures.

But they're probably not as cool as Holmes's adventures.

So, moot point. >__>

Hooray, Watson. XD I believe I like the bottom pic the best, because the good doctor's expression is priceless. XDD

Baha, thanks.
I can't help but think that being eternal straight man to Holmes would be an exasperating business.
