And who knows, once Overwatch gets banned in China, maybe we can turn Zarya into an LBGTQ icon? Cause you know how much the Ruskies hate that.

I love how people from different political backgrounds are supporting free expression in Hong Kong, but it's a little annoying to see such little support for free expression from liberals when it comes to social media and conservative opinions. Two steps backwards, one step forwards I guess.

This one wasn't some asshole saying slurs, it's an authoritarian capitalist state that pretends it's communist bullying a guy for wanting his peeps to have human rights.
It's an actual censorship situation, so like...duh

Except people here aren't being censored just for "slurs", they're getting censored for opinions.

This one is an actual free speech issue, Blizzard is censoring somebody on behalf of a very muscular state and then pretends like that isn't a political statement, even though it very much is.
There's plenty of actual free speech problems in the US too, FOSTA/SESTA's kinda the big recent one that comes to mind. Also a bunch of assholes keep deplatforming Eli Valley for speakin' out against fascism, that's hella fucked up. Free speech isn't a pretext to yell racial slurs at a toddler, and the assholes who are tryin' to defend hate speech as free speech have knowingly or unknowingly enabled censorship by behaving indefensibly and poisoning the well.

FOSTA/SESTA pertains to sex trafficking, what does that have to do with free speech?
And I have no clue who Eli Valley is, sorry.
Who is "yelling racial slurs at a toddler"? Missed who you were referring to. Is that this Eli Valley guy?

MissMuffinTop In reply to VentAnger [2019-10-26 09:25:27 +0000 UTC]
FOSTA/SESTA made traffiicking worse by cutting off safe venues for independent sex work and specifically entails silencing content that some people don't like. Like, listen to what the people impacted by the law have to say about it. You can't just go "intent matters, high horse high horse" and ignore the reality of what shit does. Sex workers said it would be bad, and it turned out to be bad for exactly the reasons they said it was.

Eli Valley is a Jewish cartoonist, he satirizes jerks. He does a lot with grotesque and caricature to make blunt, confrontational points.
Here's an example: pbs.twimg.com/media/EC-zewOXoA…
There was a New York Times columnist, Bret Stephens, who got mad at a tweet that pretty much nobody saw calling him a bedbug, and Bret made a big stink out of it and tried to get the person who said it fired for making fun of him. Bret had a huge public meltdown and went on and on about how it's dehumanizing language to call him a bedbug, but then turns around and talks shit about entire ethnic groups regularly. So Eli drew him as a bug to make fun of the hypocrisy of being a "campus free speech" crusader that's trying to get a professor fired for hurting his feelings.
Eli Valley tells it like it is and doesn't pull punches (here's his take on a stunt Chelsea Clinton pulled, if you don't believe me), and a bunch of the people who get professionally concerned about safe spaces and campus free speech like, keep trying to deplatform Eli Valley because he's too good at making fun of them. That's an actual free speech issue, people responding to valid and artistic criticism with censorious action.
~~~
And you know what hate speech is, right? Hate speech endangers free speech by being something that SHOULD be stopped, thus making censorship more appealing as a solution to any problems anyone with leverage might have because its existence normalizes censorship. It's like how mass shootings endanger gun rights.
Still waiting for you to point to how it's an issue of free speech.
Oh okay, Eli Valley is a dumb cockroach, thanks for the info.
Three million "palestinians" can't vote because "palestine" isn't even a fucking country, btw.
"hate speech" is threats and direct incitements to violence.
That's already illegal.
yeah, the limitus of not being political kinda ... ends when it's to the scale of 1 country completely ending the sovereignty of another country
I understand to a point whey tourneys discourage activism, but when it's something like this (or back in WWII, Germany invading Poland and turning a blind eye) = that's wrong
and won't ban any other users / players for fighting a fight
we're talking about the company who fabricated a story about a non-existent female Overwatch player named 'Ellie" who was harassed in order to paint Blizzard as noble defenders of equality.
Thinking "oh, they'll turn around, I'm sure" may be misplaced optimism on your part.
what's more likely to cause them to change is a financial loss. Their priority of this action is on the Chinese profits, and they protected that profit with this action - so they undoubtedly see it as a good sign (US market can be blamed for "not understanding tournament rules and being enlightened like they are" )
in blizzard's defense, china does represent a big portion of their income and won't really impact the protests whether or not they side with HK or the chinese government.
i'm not saying they did the right thing but it was between losing massive amounts of income or looking bad
JonFreeman In reply to monosuperboss [2019-10-11 16:21:27 +0000 UTC]
that's exactly why Blizzard is under the shitstorm = everyone is calling Blizzard out for justifying their actions with Chinese profits. It's kinda hard to use the offense in question as the defense.
I kinda think it's more effective to push a singular character so that it trends higher.
We're talking about a vile government so paranoid an insecure that they banned Winnie the Pooh because he meme'd into an insult/criticism of a Chinese government official. It's more likely to get a Blizzard character banned in China if efforts are concentrated.
