Description (C)2008 Paizo Publishing

A piece from A Guide to Katapesh. This city sits at the foot of a high mountain pass. One of my favourite pieces I've painted in recent times.

I like it! It feels a bit Hindu Kush, I can picture Pashtun coming in with camels to trade with the isolated populace! This one goes straight to my favs!

Do you use references when painting detailed landscape shots like this one, or is it pure imagination?

This one particular one is pretty much pure imagination, but I will look at a variety of inspiration when I set out on a project, just to either refresh my mind on the specifics of (for example) Afghan walled towns, or Tuscan mountain villages. I'm lucky enough to live somewhere where I can see some fairly rugged scenery out of the window and that's a big help!

Very good, digging the marks and textures in this.......

I'm curious what parts did you do in Artrage?

Cheers! A great deal of this one is Artrage. All the impasto marks on the buildings and the mountains is AR, the foreground too. I did some finer work in Painter, then finer still in PS, and tweaked my levels and added some gradients where needed in PS. I'd say its about 85% AR though.

Beautiful scene. I would love to see a step by step tutorial of your workflow, combining the three art packages you used here. Loving Ninja Mountain BTW.

This is awesome. I love the feeling of this painting... although, I must admit, I immediately thought of Conan the Barbarian, riding into the city with the horse thief. XD Good ol' Conan.

Very nice. Reminds me of a documentary I've seen recently about Alexander the Great's campaign through Afghanistan - similar mountains and architecture.

Thanks Jan!
I'm glad you're getting that Afghan vibe - that's the kind of thing that sprang to mind when I read the brief. The Hindu Kush, The Man Who Would Be King and so on. A place ripe for adventure!

"The Man Who Would Be King"
That was a great film! I saw it once as a kid and all I remember is that it was very good and sad.
I must try to get it on DVD or something, thanks for the tip!

Its my favourite film EVAR! Well worth tracking down. They just don't make them like they used to. Sean Connery and Micheal Caine in full effect.
