Wow...there is so much make-up on her face that she looks like an unreal person. Great. I like it.

What kind of lighting did you use on this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 15:30:11 +0000 UTC]

I used soft lighting... & Flash

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 15:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah it worked nice. On or off camera flash?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 16:03:21 +0000 UTC]

Off camera flash.
I use on camera flash as little as possible

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 16:17:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, me too. But I have the SB-800 for my D70 and barely use it, so I can't say the same about off camera as well. Do you sync it or do it manually?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 16:25:21 +0000 UTC]

I use the SB-800... why don't you ever use it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 17:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Can't seem to use it or judge it's use as effective as I can natural light. How do you use it? I could use some pointers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 18:02:32 +0000 UTC]

that's very true...
You can hit the test button to see where the shadows lie...
I have a studio light with a modeling light that's on all the time.
I just am kind of use to knowing where the light will go

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 21:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Hm. So take a test shot, meter off your shadows, and reset?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 21:24:50 +0000 UTC]

Meter off my shadows?
Reset what? hahaha
You're talking to someone that never took a class in photography ever...
Damn, maybe I need to get on that huh?

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 23:56:34 +0000 UTC]

It'd make our conversations slightly more clear, lol, that's all. I don't believe photography is something that can be wholly taught, because a lot of it is thinking and feeling and knowing what will look good, not measuring everything.

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-11 12:35:38 +0000 UTC]

I would like to know all the fancy gear that's out there & slowly build up a collection of cool lighting stuff
I've found that most of what I want to do can be done with a very simple set up for now...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-11 14:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Same here. I want to find a reliable setting on the SB-800 I can use to shoot photojournalism assignments and just meter from there, as in go up and down on the settings. So far, I haven't. But then again, I have not gotten around to researching the flash unit in-depth online and finding all the neat tricks I'm sure it has. I got it for free, so I kind of take it for advantage.

hey, i'll take it off your hands hahaha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-11 17:35:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha you'll understand if I pass on that, right?

I've got so much going on that I just haven't had the time to do any in-depth into it. I plan on it though.

Yeah, yet I post on DA? I may need to re-evaluate my priorities, I know.

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 16:24:54 +0000 UTC]

What do you mean sync it?
I don't know how you can set off a flash manually, haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 17:55:34 +0000 UTC]

FLASH button, mate. Haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 18:01:33 +0000 UTC]

What, you use a long exposure and hit the flash button?

I just sync it with the shutter

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 21:19:23 +0000 UTC]

With TTL-BL?

No, I strobe for products at different distances and effects.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-10 21:29:39 +0000 UTC]

What I do...
I have a sync cord to a normal studio light...
I put my camera on Manual, so I can set the aperture & shutter as I like...
then I adjust my studio light with a slider.

Sometimes I use the SB-800 in addition to the studio light...
I press the up & down buttons to tell it how bright to be.
I don't know any technical names, haha... does that help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

95101 In reply to JonnyBalls [2005-08-10 23:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you up it by thirds. I do that too. I just don't have studio equipment. I understand now. I thought there was more to the flash I wasn't getting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyBalls In reply to 95101 [2005-08-11 12:34:20 +0000 UTC]

well, you can sync with the SB800 too... but when I checked it out the cord was like $50, haha.
