Галатея (G a l a t e i a) · нереида - дочь Нерея. В нее был влюблен страшный сицилийский циклоп Полифем, а она, отвергая его, сама влюблена в Акида-Ациса (сына лесного бога Пана). Полифем подстерег Акида и раздавил его скалой. После этого Галатея превратила своего возлюбленного в прекрасную прозрачную речку.
