I always liked this idea, given their born of two elements of horrors that they represent or personified via their appearance.Β
Cthulhu represents the unknown something that is beyond our possible comprehension and means of control, the approaching dreadful inevitable.
Godzilla represents (originally before taking the more action defined traits) the force, or wrath of nature, spurred by atomic horrors is an engine of atomic energy that is destructive and out of control. Similar to Cthulhu, Godzilla symbolizes a certain inevitability once it rises.Β
I can't imagine a winner only an ending which seems fitting, but it does serve as an example of 'there's always something better' or worse in this case. While Lovecraft's creation was inspired by sleeping giant mythos and other concepts of horror at the time (An octopus was regarded as a sea monster especially in the 19th century where the sea was seen as a source of danger) Godzilla's inspiration comes from horror experienced, than imagined (the atomic bombs)
One would wonder if Lovecraft had lived upto the 1950's (He was only 46 when he died in 1937) Would he had developed a different concept of horror had he learnt of the holocoust and the atomic bombs?

They are just such different entities, Godzilla is a force of nature, that while powerful, still is mortal. Where as Cthulhu isn't really a traditional monster, now I have not read any of the Cthulhu books, or seen any Cthulhu media in general, but I do know that he doesn't really act as a giant monster, he turns his victims insane with visions and hallucinations, he doesn't really destroy cities like other monsters. Plus he is a god and I am pretty sure he is invincible, so... good luck Godzilla, you'll need it. (Note I am a huge Godzilla fan, so I know what I am talking about at least with the Godzilla side of things.)

Godzilla took a meteor rite to de face (not a scratch). survived and escaped hell killing satan (or atleast a powerful demon) and blew up the world doing. survived with just his heart still functional and survived and escaped a BLACK HOLE. danced, flyed and raped physics. Cthulhu sleeps.
