Description Here is the castle of the royal pony sisters: 20% less crumbly edition, because the original was too crumbled. I swear, they made castles out of nature valley granola bars back then. Anyways, the original was also very ambiguous so it left alot of room for interpretations, but I also used some ideas from [link] . Completion time of 14 hours over a period of 3 days.

I can honestly say I've never been as curious as to what their old castle looked like before, until I've seen this.

There is very little artwork of it out there, but I was inspired to draw this by a piece done by an artist who simply goes by "Moe". Check him out if you want!

Does this "Moe" have a DA?

No one knows.. he's a mysterious one. As far as I know he doesn't. All his pieces on EQD simply have "Moe" for the source. His stuff is all over google. Pretty sure he stopped making art for a while, though. It's a shame! [link]

Wow!!!

Moe is essentially a Ghost Artist now.

Wandering the cyber streets looking for shows that need to be punished on a canvas, and when their found... his/her all is given into full canvas beatings.

This is absolutely amazing. There's so much detail and I could spend a good fifteen minutes just staring at it, catching all the little things here and there. I love the mysticism tone to it, what with all the fog and ivy all over the place. Definitely my favorite piece of all your stuff.

Thanks! I really appreciate it, since this one seems to not be as well-received as some of my other work, haha

Words, mere words cannot describe how this resonates with me! it sets an atmosphere of both mystery, of old and different times, and of a path that is nearing its end (as it did on the show).

I apologize, but I cannot add much more to my thoughts... and I am usually NOT stingy with my words! Bravo!

Thanks! I liked doing this one because the original was very vague so it left alot of room for interpretation. I'm glad it works for you!

Nobodyspatzy In reply to josh-5410 [2013-02-09 21:30:18 +0000 UTC]

indeed. Much like your other artwork, in reminds me a wee bit of Dark Souls (well the old "New Londo" ruins to be specific).

Capturing beauty that is destroyed is a difficult thing to do, but when it is pulled off, it comes out wonderfully! Once again, great work, and yes, I found your interpretation wonderful!

There aren't enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe this work of art. Brilliant job.

It seems to me like this is only a few years after the abandonment, as much of it still appears to be in relatively good condition; this is especially the case of the suspension bridge, as besides one of those posts having partly fallen over, it still looks like ponies can safely walk over the chasm without harm.

...oh, and nice touch with the Mare in the Moon rising/setting in the background.

PS: I was wondering, what are those three glowing circles at the top of the drawing?

josh-5410 In reply to Emperordaniel [2012-04-10 22:56:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Glad you like it. I couldn't really make anything realistic out of the original, so I decided to draw what I thought it would have been like if it weren't damaged as much.
The glowing circles are holes on the paper which let light through from the scanner. I do use regular 8.5x11 sheets, after all

You have some skills kiddo...
I'm kidding, that's just freaking awesome ! I didn't give it a lot of attention first but after reading the comments of my fellow Annonymoose-something, the fog is, indeed, very impressive.
Great job !

(Do an epic battle next ! )

This always left me wondering what happened to this castle. Did they just abbandon it in order to move to Canterlot or was it somehow destroyed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

josh-5410 In reply to Roxanne13579 [2012-04-04 00:55:28 +0000 UTC]

I never thought about that.. now that I think about it, I can't help but feel it had something to do with discord or nightmare moon

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Roxanne13579 In reply to josh-5410 [2012-04-04 13:06:56 +0000 UTC]

I'd say Nightmare Moon. The alicorn-sisters didn't have a castle yet when Discord was still ruling and I don't think Discord would place such a castle there when he still ruled.
Anyway, once again an awesome picture

josh-5410 In reply to Roxanne13579 [2012-04-05 03:56:32 +0000 UTC]

maybe Celestia had an epic battle with NMM in the castle and it got damaged beyond repair? Anyways I'm glad you like it!

Emperordaniel In reply to josh-5410 [2012-04-10 18:14:42 +0000 UTC]

Judging from the opening narraration in Friendship is Magic, Part One, the fight between the sisters was probably of epic proportions, so I'm in agreement with you there. That hypothesis also gives a good reason for Celestia to leave the Elements in the castle afterwards instead of taking them with her back to Canterlot or wherever, as using all six of them alone against Nightmare Moon would probably have been quite the energy drain on her.

Oh you awesome, awesome man! TwT

That detailing... just where in the world do you get patience for those details! And I mean grass specifically! Just look at it!

And the depth, something I'm probably horrible at - those mountains in the distance behind the castle are so awesome!

I am just waiting for someone experiences to come up to you and ask if they can color this, I can already see it.

Awesome as always! ^^

That fog effect...never knew you could do something like that with sketching. You are breaking every single archetype I had placed on the bounds of what a simple pencil sketch can do. I'm almost scared to imagine the sheer magnitude of awesome that would happen if you were to paint or do digital artwork (if this isn't already). Then again, the way this is done, with just a grey-scale, adds more emotion to it. I almost feel as if colouring this image would, well, I don't want to say taint, but it just wouldn't have the same effect that this undoubtedly bold interpretation has in it's present form. Does that make any sense? I hope it does. I'm just gushing at this point. You have to be one of my favorite FiM artist, if not my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE artist at this moment in time.

Again, another absolutely spectacular piece. If this is what you want to do as a career, simply sketching landscapes, or sketching in general otherwise, or whatever else in art that you wish to do, I have absolutely no doubt that you will succeed beyond even your wildest expectations.

The fog effect was done by finger smudging and a fairly sharp eraser. It's very easy once you get the hang of it
..Anyways, I was having the shittiest day before reading this. Thank you so much for your kind words. It means alot to me, to be considered at such a level by someone like that
