Description This was explicitly for the purpose of practicing making solid inks over a large, loose sketch. Also was trying out a Bristol pad as opposed to regular drawing paper to see if I liked it. Likewise on the ink front, I experimented with making lines of a few different strengths. Ultimately I was pleased the end results were sharp enough I could easily color the simply scanned line-art without any extra effort to clean them! Huuuuge time saver!
So, mission accomplished for this exercise, plus a funny expressioned Sal' with a raised eye-brow

Still want to develop more on this front of course! And it would've helped if I gave the colors an actual effort

You can see a far better colored version...

Why thank you! Sally is always one whose color scheme is up to the artist's interpretation. I try to stick closely to the classic comics though as those were truly my most favorite renditions of the whole gang

I really love the simplicty of your color pallet on Sally here! Here expression is very tomboyish, at that. c:

Joshels In reply to Chicaaaaa [2012-02-25 07:41:38 +0000 UTC]

I think Sally is at her best both tom-boyish and responsibly/intelligently in authority. Especially since those traits kind of conflict yet balance each other in a character
I'm glad yourself and others can find the simplicity of my rushed colors to actually be a positive note ^^ Makes me feel not so bad about it. However I'm still very pleased that I posted the lines for others to feel free and do what I think to be better jobs at coloring them

True, it's always nice to have a mix. Yes, simplicity can be good at times, as your piece expressed!

Oh, and I do agree on posting the lines! I love seeing how people take their approach on coloring someone's work. c:

That's how Sal should be, fun and dynamic! I'm very delighted and modestly proud to have noticeably been improving Thank you Rach!
It's amazing considering how actually very little I draw But I manage to learn something picture to picture apparently!
I'll have to keep trying to match your cleanliness of line-art though I dunno how you people rock the pens so much, I start thinking I have Parkinson's or something when I see how unsteady my hand is!

THis is a very nice piece which certainly shows that your skills have grown a significant amount and through it a developed noticable style. You certainly have found your element with this piece with your take on Sally and it comes across as both animated and captivating with the way you've worked more with the facial gestures and telling much more of a story in your work. You have a strong style here that could certainly go the distance in time due to it feeling classic, but at the same different new and engaging by your own creative approaches.

Keep it up.

Joshels In reply to shimmyshammy [2011-11-07 06:59:35 +0000 UTC]

I think the style is taking hold more. Each doodle I make of Sally lately has been seeming more consistent with each other. This is something I've been hoping to develop eventually, that way someday somebody can just be browsing dA elsewhere and recognize "Hey! That looks like it was drawn by JayLesch... yup, sure enough!"
Likewise I've always strove to give my characters attention to keeping them from seeming static and boring, typically through facial expressions and body language. So I'm glad you find I succeeded in making Sally's face engaging here
I hope I do continue to "go the distance" with your constructive critiques bolstering me along the way! Thank you very much as always good sir!

this is lovely really like how you've done her eyes, and how you've styled her hair !

Joshels In reply to hypnotising-muffin [2011-11-04 00:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you ma'am! I always try to do something creative with eyes, can't remember if I've before attempted this same thing, segmenting the iris into shaded segments, but it proves to be the source of some neat experimentation. As for her hair, it turns out all different ways when trying to grasp at how it physically works! Especially head on, it's a quandary. So my solution is to just make it work, how I want it to I'm happy you find it stylish.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Joshels In reply to SamCyberCat [2011-11-03 19:38:06 +0000 UTC]

That is Sally though right? She's a princess, but rather than stuffy and regal she's a cocky tom-boy. Which makes her personality fun! She has authority, but she's one of the fighters herself, with a dynamic visual range of emotions and expressions.
I'm glad you feel I captured that character, thank you very much

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SamCyberCat In reply to Joshels [2011-11-03 19:44:15 +0000 UTC]

It really is! She's a firm favourite of mine because they capture the "tomboy princess" appeal so well, it makes her very different to a lot of princess characters. I miss nineties cartoon females, they were so kick-ass. XD

Definitely
I like damsels that are capable of getting themselves out of distress Except for when caught in extra tight situations, then the hero comes into play.

Was a rather spontaneously drawn expression, I'm glad it panned out and didn't become funky.

Hey, I think an visual artist should do so notably all the time, I'd be upset if I seemed stagnant from year to year
But thank you Min, it's good to actually hear I've improved from somebody who's pretty much viewed my entire gallery in the making

Actaul Effort? Dude this is amazing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Joshels In reply to johnis1 [2011-11-02 21:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much dude!
I meant if only I gave the coloring specifically more effort rather than the quickie I pulled on it the image as a whole could've looked even better (such as in others like these [link] [link] [link] where I've paid extra attention to shading and lighting), but then again that wasn't the aim of this exercise for me and just the fairly flat color-job did the deed adequately! I'm very happy with the inked line-art itself though, that contrastingly was the focus of my effort

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

johnis1 In reply to Joshels [2011-11-02 21:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I know you mean now! Put shading and other details into it. It's still a good job though
