Description
A while ago, I had decided to have a day off and take a trip down to the coast. I loved to take some time, take my sketchbook and admire some of the wild water Pokemon in the area.
The open rock pools were well known for trapping an assortment of wild water-type Pokemon and this particular area was popular with trainers. I soon realized that I wasn't the only one there that day when I saw a young woman moving from one pool to the next.
I waved and we ended up talking, introducing herself as Iris.
Suddenly I saw something hop across the rocks and jump in front of her, it was a Wartortle. It swished it feathery tail and let out a hissing growl. She quickly apologized and comforted her Pokemon explaining that he was incredibly protective of her.
This wasn't unusual as starter Pokemon are often given to trainers at a young age to ensure a lasting bond. The Squirtle family in particular are known to get very attached as they have strong family ties in the wild.
After her Wartortle had calmed down, it was happy to let me feed it some dried fish I had brought with me to entice wild Pokemon to study. She explained that her family ran the Cerulean Gym and had a long-lasting connection with the ocean.
Though she loved the gym, there had always been an expectation that she would take over once she had obtained her Pokemon license, which was a lot of pressure for a 19-year-old. She told her mother that she wanted to focus on being a trainer and dreamt of traveling the world as she had at her age. Though her aunts weren't happy with her decision, her mother was supportive. After all, she had filled her head full of stories about her adventures with her friends since she was a child.
Over the next few hours, we ended up walking quite a distance up the coast. Eventually, we went our separates ways but I still look back and wonder how that sweet red-headed girl got on...
