Hehe, now I imagine it in his voice.

Fits very well with the setting, even if the poster overall sounds more suited for the American army rather than the British.

Yeah, it's kind of a "yee-haa, let's kick their asses" type of poster then "die for your king" one.

I wonder what the Tsarist Russian army would call the Germans/Austro-Hungarians...perhaps using a lot ofΒ mat?

I googled and found absolutely nothing on the subject. But we can be sure there were a lot of mat.
Too bad people in Russia have such little interest in WWI history.

Let me guess, the main interest is still WW2...

Alas, this is still one of the basic components of our national mythology.

TheWildWestPyro In reply to JousCroe [2016-11-08 02:40:58 +0000 UTC]

What exactly is "the national mythology" in Russia?

(I'm looking at Russia in history and it's pretty interesting. Which is why I'm asking you these questions.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JousCroe In reply to TheWildWestPyro [2016-11-08 09:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Well many of us tend to see our history as a sequence of heroic deeds and that the West always abused us. Basically the same shit as any country has, only in acute stage, cause Rissians are resentful and they miss the times when "everybody feared us".

Another question:

What do people think about Brezhnev? I know about Khrushchev's controversial legacy within Russia, but how about Leonid?

So a lot of Russians really do miss the USSR. Does most of Russia believe that they won WW2 by themselves as well?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

mewnimilitary42 In reply to TheWildWestPyro [2019-06-29 22:04:42 +0000 UTC]

...in a way, they did. The allies mostly just liberated France and crossed the Rhine, but the USSR, on their own, pushed the Germans back to Berlin and captured the city before the allies came to meet up with them.

Or I could be wrong. Feel free to correct.

Naturally. "We beat the fascists" - that's one of few keystones our national mythology. Though we most certainly didn't beat facsism in ourselves.

TheWildWestPyro In reply to JousCroe [2016-11-09 14:22:41 +0000 UTC]

I suppose that has a grain of truth to it. Russia technically was the biggest player in WW2 and got to Berlin first. Although America did give them bazookas, which were really valuable against pesky panzers.Β

JousCroe In reply to TheWildWestPyro [2016-11-09 14:31:17 +0000 UTC]

TheWildWestPyro In reply to JousCroe [2016-11-09 15:49:00 +0000 UTC]

Neither did I. I do agree that Russia did win WW2 in terms of the Western Front.

Also, what do they think of Stalin now?

I think the Americans called Germans "Fritz" sometimes.

The British used "Jerry" a lot during both world wars, while the French always referred to the Germans as "Boche" or "Les Boche".Β

And all the Allies used "Hun".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mewnimilitary42 In reply to TheWildWestPyro [2018-06-15 03:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Hun? Wasn’t that for the Austro-Hungarians?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheWildWestPyro In reply to mewnimilitary42 [2018-06-15 18:02:34 +0000 UTC]

No, "Hun" was specifically for the Germans. It came from an inscription German troops had on their belts: "Gott mitt Uns." That means "God save us" in German, but to the British, they thought it meant something similar to "Uns" and it clicked: how better to portray your enemy as barbarous Huns?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mewnimilitary42 In reply to TheWildWestPyro [2018-06-18 19:14:03 +0000 UTC]

So the Brits called them Jerries AND Huns?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheWildWestPyro In reply to mewnimilitary42 [2018-06-20 04:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Yep! Hun saw more use from officers, though - generally, the common soldier used Jerries.
