I offically take back what I said. I misread what you had typed. I tried the white drop shadow idea, and you're right, it is about the same. However it should be noted that you need to change the blend mode on it to screen or something else, because on multply, it won't show.

The drop shadow looks more raised to me, where as the emboss looks like it's more apart of the BG
