Description Phew, this was a long time in the making. I kept getting so many requests for an inking tutorial! It's no wonder there aren't very many good ones out there, it was the most difficult tutorial I've written yet. Even when I read through it now, I don't think it's completely concise OR clear. But it's better than nothing.

I covered a bunch of techniques ranging from the very basic to the fairly intermediate, so I hope everyone who reads it gets something out of it.

Some people also asked for a digital inking tutorial, which will not happen. I do not ink digitally, only traditionaly! Let me know if you have any questions !

Thank you, this is very useful~
but I still have some questions: What kind of paper do you use? Because I think it's really hard to ink on a piece of paper which have been erased and drawn over so many time... How thick should the paper be? Any brand suggestions?

kitton In reply to Enbi-to-Miruku [2011-09-01 05:05:08 +0000 UTC]

I don't know a great deal about papers, unfortunately. I usually buy sketchbook intended for inking. Make sure that the paper you are working on archives ink, otherwise it will fade over time. I prefer very soft and smooth papers for inking and drawing, myself, but even a high quality thicker super bright printer paper can do in a pinch!

how big of a drawing should a 005 (micron) be used on?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to kyoto240 [2011-05-02 02:25:15 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on the detail you want and the style of your drawing. I typically draw quite detailed, so I will normally use a 005. Anything larger than 11X17 I consider upping my minimum size, but it really depends on what you are wanting to achieve

kyoto240 In reply to kitton [2011-05-03 00:29:03 +0000 UTC]

haha my paper is 8x12...I often find that an 005 is actually too fat because I tend to draw small . Good advice on dark spaces!

kitton In reply to kyoto240 [2011-05-03 01:36:16 +0000 UTC]

If you are finding that the 005 is too small, maybe you should consider moving to a larger format?

kyoto240 In reply to kitton [2011-05-05 02:49:56 +0000 UTC]

yeah I think I just need to find a balance, and a steadier hand when I use it on big drawings my lines are crooked but when I use it on small ones the lines get fat and have no depth

Hi! Thanks I have a couple of different 'tips' sheets on various aspects of colouring in photoshop but I don't have a general one; however, you can find many others on this site!

I like inking....but the coloring really gets to me. I just can't seem to get it right no matter what I do.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to CoffeeKarena [2009-08-18 20:36:12 +0000 UTC]

I like inking too! Colouring takes more work because you have to understand colours and how to chose them and which ones work together.. unfortunately there is no tutorial for that, just experience, personal style, and observation!

CoffeeKarena In reply to kitton [2009-08-31 13:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Inking is awsome because I feel like I got somewhere and didn't have to go through a much longer process.

Kaiden-Zeos [2009-04-07 16:41:45 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting. Most (Actually many) how to inking books on the market right now don't give you ample advice on how to properly ink(How to Draw Manga Penning Characters is the only one I've come across that is ACTUALLY efficent enough to understand inking basics, etc.) but your advice is actually understandable for anyone to pick it right up and to absorb immediately as I struggled with inking time and time again, so your inking tutorial will DEFINITELY come in handy for me(and countless others) who seriously need inking advice on how to ink effectively.

Thanks a million.

Sorry if I keep on rambling, it's just how I am sometimes.

Thanks! Maybe one day I will be able to afford a hugeass monitor and tablet, but until then I prefer to traditionally ink. Even if I did have the hardware to do it, there is something satisfying about sitting on my bed and drawing anyway. Plus, I like how you can turn the paper hahahaha!

Ginevra25-Weasley In reply to kitton [2009-01-15 15:29:18 +0000 UTC]

Yep, you just went from "supa cool" to "OMG, lurve!" in my book. I'm a hard-core traditionalist and my fiancee just got me a Tablet for Christmas and... I don't know what to do. Lol, so when I found your tutorials, I started to remember how to breathe. I mean, who says that I have to abandon my pens and inks just because I have some fancy new hardware?

And you know the huge downside to the Tablet?

I wanna turn it SO BAD. Aaagghhhhh!

kitton In reply to Ginevra25-Weasley [2009-01-16 04:14:20 +0000 UTC]

yeah me too.. that doesn't go away :\ but! It's great for touching up work, or even just colouring existing lines. So it's still a great tool! But inking will ALWAYS be traditional for me!

ZRight now I only have ball point gel pens from wal mart. It would be great if you could recomend a specific brand for me, or a website to buy them at?

I wish I could, but for pens I just buy really cheap shit. If I could afford it, Copic seems like a really great brand though!
