I use prismacolor, expensive but very effective. I have their largest pack which is 100 + dollars.

I use them too, and I think that they are some of the best!

Do you have any sharpening tips? I used a normal metal pencil sharpener, tried doing it REEEALL slow and gentle, but some just wouldn't want to get sharpened and would keep breaking. Is it the pencil sharpener going blunt, or am I too jerky, or are some pencils just broken-ledded inside?

Hmm I use an exacto knife. Can be a bit tricky the first few times, but you get used to it.

More expensive pencil crayons tend to be softer, so they break easy!

I had read in there that there are two types: scholar and intermediate.
Is the premier the same as intermediate?? b/c i kno the scholar ones have a different container.

also this tip-sheet was very helpful ^^

kitton In reply to Britno [2008-05-01 23:56:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm not actually certain. I haven't bought any pencil crayons since they introduced the premier ones, maybe you can look it up online? The pencils really last a long time!

I'm going to try some of these tips!
I bought a 24 set at around the start of the year, and instantly loved the prismas to bits (seriously, now half of them are tiny XD).
And for my birthday, I was extremely lucky to be given a 120 set in a wooden box. I'm pretty sure the people down the road heard me squeel that day. xP
I've spent most of my life using Derwents artists and watercolour pencils.

Awww cute! Yea I got a 24 set and then I bought the ones I wanted individually!

What was even funnier was when I was walking the dogs about an hour later, and the lady next door was giving me odd looks while watering her pot plants. XD

neat tutorial! I have one suggestion. I find that a Pentel hi-polymer eraser works wonders when it comes to highlighting, and lightening dark colors.

kitton In reply to wolf-girl-kc [2007-08-17 16:06:14 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried that, I should check it out thanks!

wolf-girl-kc In reply to kitton [2007-08-17 16:10:35 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I only just started getting into pencil crayons, and discovered that on mistake ^^ although, when you are using deeper colors, the paper will still have a hint of that color, so it's best to color that area lighter to begin with.

XDD
I like pencil crayons, but I find I prefer watercolour pencils..
Though I don't have the intermediate set of prismacolours, just the scholar. Maybe I should buy myself a set...
I found a set of Laurentiens that weren't bad though...forget which kind.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to Oshimuka [2007-03-27 04:15:15 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm I never really liked laurentiens. But I do remember they were kind of the "best" of the cheaper brands... I also never really got into the watercolour ones, personally. But its something I was always meaning to... combining watercolours with pencil crayons sounds good for me!! Thanks for taking the time to drop by and comment

great tutorial. I feel i have coloured enough to not learn to mcuh of this, but it is great nontheless
Have you tried the brand Derwent? All my pencils are of the Derwent brand, the colour pencils aswell as the sketching pencils and my minimal set of 2H, HB and 6B

if you havent, you should try to find them, they are very good i think.
i Cant compare with Prismacolour since i havent used them, but Derwent is to a soft and a bit waxy, to ensure smoth gradiations and such

No, sorry I haven't tried that brand. Sounds nice, though!

freakresponse [2006-04-05 17:34:11 +0000 UTC]

i actually have prismacolor, but only a small 12 pack. even these are expensive though, so i was able to get these. my friend actually has a 36 or 48 (cant remember which exactly) pack of prismacolor colored pencils, and a pack of markers, and her coloring looks great because she uses them right. i've been wanting to get more of these pencils, so after i read this out loud to my mom she has decided to let me borrow enough money to buy both the 24 pack and a pack of markers. so thanks for helpin lol XD

Ahhh I feel kinda dumb xD;;
The only thing they had at my art store was a 48 pack of scholars. 8D; Which ended up being like 22$.
I only got them reciently, and even though they're not intermediate, I'll try some of your tips ^^
Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to Lynn-Chan [2006-03-24 19:10:13 +0000 UTC]

no no don't feel dumb. They are still MUCH better than most other brands of pencil crayons, and they are a nice step up so you can get a feel for them :3 I think the reason I never liked them is because I jumped up to the intermediates first, and then my mom bought me some scholars because they were cheap and she thought it was the same thing. Stepping down to them is hard, but its probably really nice to step up to them from crayolas and stuff :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lynn-Chan In reply to kitton [2006-03-24 21:11:00 +0000 UTC]

^^ Ah yeah, they're much better then any other pencil crayons that I've ever used.
So much variation and they blend so well. I shocked myself xD;
Perhaps once I get the hang of them I'll try intermediates and see which ones I prefer.
:3 It's sure nice to have something better then friggin crayola. n_n

This tutorial was really useful I was just looking into colour pencils myself and wasn't quite sure what to buy because my own set is hard to use. Pity about the price, but my parents owe me a birthday present so that bit is solved

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to Crystalia [2006-03-21 19:14:19 +0000 UTC]

Hahahha! They seemed so expensive to me at first, but when I turned my eyes onto a set of markers that cost 5$/pop suddently the 1.60$ for the prismas seemed cheap (CDN)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crystalia In reply to kitton [2006-03-22 09:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I'd dearly love to get the set of copic markers, but they cost $400 in my country So I have to save up slowly and just buy those I need hehe.

kitton In reply to Crystalia [2006-03-22 09:13:50 +0000 UTC]

me neither So...I stuck to water colours, colour pencils and the occasional marker piece with the limited number of colours I have

A useful tutorial Thanks for sharing! I admit I prefer digital mediums to traditional as the latter requires a great deal of skill and there's no undo function. Traditional mediums are worth a try though. It's nice seeing your work on paper (:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to ellessis [2006-03-21 06:15:36 +0000 UTC]

I have digital tutorials coming soon don't worry :3 I really don't think that traditional art takes any more or less skill....

My favorite colored pencils are the desighn spectracolors that were discontinued a few years back. They're so much better then prismas..... I don't let anybody use them!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to catzilla [2006-03-21 06:16:12 +0000 UTC]

But they don't make them anymore? :0

I can't imagine anything being better than prismas... they act exactly how I want :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

catzilla In reply to kitton [2006-03-21 15:37:58 +0000 UTC]

No!

I like them more then prismas for that reason and because they don't break at all... They're really sturdy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to catzilla [2006-03-21 19:13:28 +0000 UTC]

Prismas never break for me anymore either... I just got used to them :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

catzilla In reply to kitton [2006-03-22 01:16:52 +0000 UTC]

Well then that works out wonderfully! I think I'm just too used to mine to get used to the prismas

leotheyardiechick [2006-03-21 02:41:38 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I'm glad someone did a tutorial like this. I'm a Prismacolor user myself; have been for about *counts* 3 or so years now. Though, I started out with a 48 pack because that was all the poorly stocked art store had left (boy, did my pocket squeal!). I love them so much!

It's so true that Bristol is very hard on them, but most of my work these days are either commissions or stuff I want to last for a very long time...I guess sacrifices have to be made sometimes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to leotheyardiechick [2006-03-21 06:17:19 +0000 UTC]

Mine don't break at all anymore :3 I only included all of that because I remeber that when I was just starting out it was a huge problem for me :0

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

leotheyardiechick In reply to kitton [2006-03-22 04:49:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, they don't break. Just wear down rather quickly. Guess I colour a mite too hard.

Tifasjk [2006-03-20 22:46:32 +0000 UTC]

great to read many thanks for this!

although there's one thing...I have a set of 36 prisma colours and, mine don't actually say intermediate or scholar so...I'm somewhat confused there !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kitton In reply to Tifasjk [2006-03-20 22:49:41 +0000 UTC]

They are most likely intermediate then. It doesn't actually say anywhere on the box but it does say scholar on the scholar box. If you want to order them, companies order them in as "intermediate" thats why there is a difference I suppose :3!

I hope you found it useful and helpful!
