Description I generally don't put up bare drawings up but I really liked this one.
Emre is not only getting me to draw all the bookmark designs for next year but he wants me to draw some kind of colourful fantasy-like scenery to use for the header of the website for the anime society.

The picture they aready have is great and I'm not sure I can do better because Tony is much better with landscapes than I am - I'm a people artist, generally. Still, this is my attampt at that kind of scenery. I'll put the finished version up when it's done. Anyway, I think this has a good atmosphere and the idea appeals to me - I want flying sakura trees. Appologies for no details in the tree leaves, I plan to do that when I colour.

Drawn in pencil, background pinkness and outline colour courtesy of photoshop.

~wyltedr0se asked to colour the picture so I sent her the flat drawing. Here is her coloured version at [link]
If you also want to have a crack at colouring this picture just ask. I never mind so long as what I've done is fairly accredited to me.

o.o omg that is awesome. Do you think you can draw me a few backgrounds? I can draw you a few things in exchange, since I have no money and whatnot.

Sorry, I can't just draw for no pay. I'm a commission artist, you know, and as a university student my time is valuable enough as it is. I can't really do it out of charity. If you can offer money I would consider it but I would only take more drawings as payment from people the likes of which you see in my favourites - I have quite high standards on that sort of thing. Sorry but I think that's fair.

eh, it is ok. ^^ I just thought I would ask because I need mythic/fantasy backgrounds for the anime I am making. Thanks anyway.

That's ok. You're perfectly, right, if you don't ask you don't get. I appreciate your positions. To be quite honest, and as you can probably see from the rest of my gallery, backgrounds are not my main thing in the first place. IT takes a lot more time and effort to construct a good background than it does to draw a single character, because so many more features are involved.

this truly rocks! can you give me some kind of a landscape tut?

JRock-Prophet In reply to hot-summer [2007-08-21 16:24:03 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. I gladly would except I don't really do landscapes very often and I'm not sure how I actually go about them... it just sort of happens. Because my speciality is people I have a good idea of how I actually do it but my landscapes aren't that well studied. They just happen... But if you have any specific questions I'll be glad to try and answer them.

Question!!!
Do you know how to pencil-colour landscapes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JRock-Prophet In reply to hot-summer [2007-08-22 11:27:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, when I colour with either pencils or photoshop or paints I don't really use different techniques depending on the subject matter. This is probably a really lame answer but I don't see why it would matter whether it is a character portrait or a landscape... colour is just colour... putting the right colours in the right place. *Is mystified* It's just that people are kind of peachy coloured and landscapes are brown/green/grey... The same rules apply for colouring anything - try to stay within the lines and if it's further away it's less saturated.

Heehee. That's nice for you. Clamp is a very pretty style and if you keep working on it you'll be able to achieve the style and precision that defines the style. All good things come with time. Also maybe if you tried computer colouring it would look better. Coloured pencils are all very well, I used to use them in the old days too but it's very hard to disguise the inevitable strokes and the result looks amateurish no matter how good the line art may be. Of course, if may not be possible for you to get a program like photoshop right now but it's something to bear in mind for the future. Just keep refining your style until then.

Surely it refers to drawing living things in a religious context? Like drawing things that might be constued as images of god. But you're not doing it religiously. People exist the same as apples and landscapes so what's the difference if you draw one and not the other? Besides, you could just carry on drawing and just say they are robots. That way they are not alive.

-_- who are you trying to make me fool? and no it doesnt refer to living things in a religeos context. living moving beings all in all arent to be drawn. *sigh* life stinks beyond belief. i wanna die.

I have a muslim friend who draws people all the time. He's not forbidden from drawing or listening to music... I don't see why anybody would be. Could it be you are misinterpretting something? I can't see why the rules would be different for him and for you. He is a very devout muslim, in fact. And asspiring to be a graphic artist. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

JRock-Prophet In reply to hot-summer [2007-08-27 11:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, he is Egyptian himself and his heritage is very important to him but he lives in England. Also the music thing mystifies me a little bit because in this modern age you can't really AVOID music... Also I see muslim girls walking around all the time with their full veily things on (sorry, I forget the name), with ipod headphones underneath. Fair enough, they are the younger ones - the older ones probably haven't even heard of ipods. And I know a muslim guy who's a really good dancer. You kind of need music to dance.

well, if you want it straight, i walk around with my headset under my scarf too not everyone follows this rule because its so hard to do that now in the modern age XD

JRock-Prophet In reply to hot-summer [2007-08-27 12:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Ok. I wasn't being completely dense then. Please understand that I'm not trying to be insulting, it's just that I'm trying to make sense of something that surprises me... because I know devout muslims who love music and art and their parents don't tell them they can't do it. I was under the impression that if there were such rules they must be very old ones and don't really apply to muslims today. A life without art or music would be very sad. All I can say is that if everyone obeyed such rules in the past, ancient muslim countries must have been very boring places to be. Also the art thing mustifies me because I went to the Victorian and Albert museum recently and there was a display of Islamic and Middle Eastern art... although a lot of it was just pretty patterns there were also pictures of people etc...

hot-summer In reply to JRock-Prophet [2007-08-28 04:49:20 +0000 UTC]

hmmm.....i know that life without music or art is horrible, but religeon is religeon and rules are rules. and no i dont feel insulted ^^ not all muslims are the same....like right now im listening to J-pop and if dad finds that out hes gonna chop my head off XXD and personally i think that being religious was much easier for ancient muslims because there wasnt anime to be obsessed with, no internet to waste ones time (the way dad says it. XD) and my grandma doesnt even know how to use the microwave. in fact, she was introduced to it when she came visiting our house and shes like, "what is this?" lolz.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JRock-Prophet In reply to hot-summer [2007-08-28 08:42:26 +0000 UTC]

Aw, bless. That's kind of sweet. My grandma hadn't used a microwave until she came to live with us but now it's her best friend.

Still, it seems to me that religion is not what's holding you back - it just sounds like your parents disapprove and are using religion as a reason. All the people I've mentioned are very religious but are still able to indulge their love of art and music and nobody tells them otherwise. They have very nice parents, though... except one of them but he's left home now si it's not so much an issue anymore. The disagreement wasn't on religious terms anyway.

I know it's difficult to do what you love when your parents put pressure on you but it's a matter of interpreting what you think is right. The fact that so many muslims interpret their religion to allow for these things must mean that it's not written in stone that they are forbidden to do it. Many of these rules were made for good reasons in the past I'm sure but they just aren't valid anymore. I mean, as a Christian example, Deutoronomy says all sorts of things about what to eat and not eat. It makes sense because things like shellfish ARE prone to giving you an upset stomach but sanitation these days means that such a "rule" is redundant. I never take these things as rules anyway, just as suggestions.

Besides, things like "don't murder", "Don't steal" are common sense because you shouldn't do things that hurt other people. Art and music are very secondary, really, compared to the big things and they don't HURT anybody, in fact they make people feel BETTER. Think of all the wonderful feelings that have been stirred in people through literature, poetry, music, paintings. In my book that can only be a good thing. If there is a God I'm sure he'd want me to embrace the talent he has given me for such things - after all, it must be there for a reason. I don't see how God could dissaprove of art since art essentially expresses the soul and anything that makes the soul soar is a good thing. There is all sort of religious art and music in the world too. Art is just CULTURAL. Without it we are barely human. I wouldn't listen too closely just because some ancient guy says I shouldn't like art and music - anybody that makes a "rule" like that clearly has no sense of fun and no sense of what it is to be alive. Sounds like that ancient guy was bitter because HE had no talent himself.

(Again the usual apology in case I have said something shocking but I am just trying to speak from the heart and express what I feel without causing offence).
