Upon being approached, Atlas can mostly be seen as cautious and distrustful, lacking faith in humans as well as other dogs. Considering his line of duty, he's had very little interaction with canines who haven't worked in the same field, and therefore may seem out of practice or even a bit awkward. With an enormous personal loss hanging over his shoulders, Atlas may be rather distant and indifferent, even with those he's acquainted with. Though not without class, he is perfectly capable of holding civil and rational interactions. Should he find and befriend someone of interest however, he will display unforeseen gestures of loyalty and thoughtfulness.
Unlike most other dogs Atlas is not driven by toys or balls, but rather by a job given to him. Trained with German commands, he does not know basic human instructions such as "sit" or "stay", which only assists in making him appear to be a bad dog. Though bad in the eyes of people, he is very calm and does not get excited easily. Thriving under stressful situations, he does occasionally seek out trouble and attempt to put a stop to it, with or without help.
Due to his skillfulness and popularity during his years of working, Atlas holds a bit of internal pride and will cave easily when faced with any kind of competition. In a case where Atlas should be chased or challenged, he may grow rather aggressive and has been known to not only bite, but lock his jaws and refuse to release.
When not in the company of others, Atlas takes particular interest in hunting, star-gazing and purposefully taunting city animal trappers. He finds that they all keep him on his toes, similarly to how he used to train with his human.
// PRE-GROUP HISTORY //
When first choosing a puppy, the handler should watch the pups as a pack and observe each one. The ideal choice is an aggressive, self confident pup who shows leadership over the others, and who will readily approach you as a stranger without any hesitation or fear. Ideally we are searching for the Alpha male of the litter, or the next closest prospect depending on temperment.
Atlas is a product of years of obedience and loyalty training. Having been selected and purchased from an out-of-state breeder, he was driven back to Canidale where his owner and handler, Officer Melendez, spent the time to raise and train him until he was hired into the Canidale Police Department as a K-9 Officer who specialized in explosives and tracking. During the time they worked together, the pair quickly developed an untouchable bond. In good humor, the department referred to them as "Batman and Robin". Due to this, the duo would dress up when visiting public places such as schools or festivals, and were often interviewed for the town's news channel.
After nearly four years consisting of many successful runs, a call came in requesting aid in tracking a missing person. Without hesitation Melendez and Atlas loaded up and were on the scene within the hour. In the pouring rain Atlas had just barely managed to find the trail and lead Melendez and Brylow - another on-scene officer - to the person. However, this case was different from past ones. As the group neared the missing person - a young woman of about 24 years - two armed men came from behind the bushes and began firing shots. Atlas was the first to react, the only thought in his mind being to distract the men and keep Melendez safe as the area turned into a warzone. With all focus on the missing person being lost, it was easy for her to make her way to the squad car, where she was loaded into the backseat. On the outside however, the voice of Melendez calling for backup amidst gunshots was all Atlas heard before he barreled into one man, his jaws finding hold around an extended arm. Really, he was lucky that the criminal was a bad shot. Just as he was trained, Atlas gnawed and pulled until the man was screaming and rolling on the ground. With one incapacitated, surely the officers could handle the other. Though blind to where the said criminal was and what he was doing, it came as a shock when a bullet lodged itself into the flank of the K-9 cop, just below his vest. The initial pain was enough to distract the dog for a hair of a moment, during which he was bashed in the eyes by the downed man until he released hold. Never release. The one easy thing he was trained to do and he failed.
At this point, fire had begun to spread across his rear and up his spine as Atlas was kicked away from his target. Without the use of his back-end, the canine could only wobble about and watch as Melendez - who had peeked over the squad car to look for his partner - was shot point blank. With not one, but two officers down, Brylow retreated to Melendez as the backup arrived and both criminals fled the scene.
Darkness enveloped as Atlas soon fell unconscious..
It was two weeks before Atlas was able to get around without aid, though the pain was still there.. Just not from the gunshot. Three weeks after the incident, hundreds of officers and their K-9 companions payed respects to Officer Jacob Melendez - including Atlas. After the funeral however, nobody was able to move Atlas from his post just next to the side of Melendez's coffin. It took a tranquilizer dart and two officers to move him off-site. A week later he was left in the care of Officer Juarez, with the department believing the dog would carry on with his duty. They were wrong.
Although most police dogs are adopted by their handlers, in rare cases it is possible for civilians to adopt them. This can happen when a handler dies or if a police dog was unable to complete law enforcement training or jobs. Civilians are usually third in line for the opportunity to adopt a retired police dog - after the handler's family and law enforcement officers.
With Melendez having no family aside from Atlas, and no other officers willing to try and work with the depressed canine, Atlas was soon dropped off at an adoption agency specializing in retired K-9 officers. After nearly two months of waiting, a young couple came out of the woodwork and were approved to adopt the dismissed dog. Even with all of their research however, they weren't fit to handle Atlas. Without knowing anything about his demeanor, nor the words used to command him, the pair grew angry and hateful towards Atlas, therefore driving him away. Finding that the fence in their backyard was a mere 5 ft tall, he quickly cleared it and retreated into the streets.
// EXTRAS //
The couple who adopted Atlas are still searching for him, and call the surrounding pounds frequently. They even managed to get the police department to keep an eye out for him.
Atlas can often be found resting on Officer Jacob Melendez's grave.
Atlas refuses to remove his collar, even though he has taken the title of a stray.
