Description Third in a series of charcoal LOST portraits, time to represent the bad(?) guys... with Benjamin Linus. I'm quickly learning the workings of Painter and my new drawing tablet, each drawing seems to look exponentially better than the last. Ben took quite a bit longer, I really had it set my mind to render every little detail that I could. I'm having a great time working on these and can't wait to get more done.

10-12 hours.

I especially appreciate his eyes... getting eyes right is hard enough without them being as intense and unique as Ben's. Truly, the extra time you spent on the pic paid off.

I'm not much of an art instructor, but I'd say if there's any secret, it's really just a lot of tedious work. It's similar to drawing the face, or anything really, I start off by blurring my eyes a bit to pick out the broad areas of value, find where the generally dark, light and midtone values are and paint them in roughly. And shrink the brush a bit and pick out the different values in these broad areas. Repeat a few more times. Eventually, all that will be left is to get some actual hair strand details in there. I go over the whole hair area with a small brush that adjusts size and opacity based on my tablet pressure and draw strand-by-strand. It's time consuming, but it's not that difficult, just make sure you always follow the flow and direction of the hair.

Hopefully that makes some sense. I often don't think about and remember specific tricks or anything while drawing, I just figure out what seems to work and do it. I don't think there's much of a secret, just dedication to a lot of fiddly work.
