Description An art test I did for Games Workshop, which unfortunately did not pass their requirements!  Oh well, guess I'll try again in the future!

I've seen other great artists on Deviantart go through the same, brilliant work, but they failed to capture the miniatures. Funny thing is, last time I seen this it was the ork that was way off, and this time.. It's still the ork. People just seem to have trouble with them.

If you try again I would round out the eyes, make them small and beady, as opposed to long and slim as they are here, also work on the lower maw, widen it out at the bottom and make the nose more pig/ape like.
Still a great piece.

Hey, thanks for the comments!  I have indeed tried again, and am waiting for a response from GW.  Here is my latest iteration:

So I'm confused... you post stuff that you did for Games Workshop all the time?  But you say you failed the test?

jubjubjedi In reply to NicholasWolf [2014-11-28 22:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Alll that art is for Fantasy Flight Games!  They are licensees of the Warhammer franchise, which is owned by Games Workshop.  They do RPGs and card games, while GW does miniature war gaming.

Huh, interesting.  I had just assumed FFG was licensing the work through GW.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take GW to get back to you after your submission?

jubjubjedi In reply to NicholasWolf [2014-11-29 21:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, FFG hires all the artists and then gets the work approved by GW.
They got back to me really quick, a day after actually.

Neat.  Seems like a sweet gig, how did you get involved?

Fantasy Flight actually contacted me a few years ago, probably due to the fan art I was doing.

That's an excellent deal.  Well bummer about Games Workshop, maybe you can try again someday?  Did they say why they rejected it?

jubjubjedi In reply to NicholasWolf [2014-12-01 07:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's really just a matter of finding the time to try again lol... they accept submissions all the time I guess.  And no, they were not specific at all regarding why they rejected it... something about how they didn't match the miniatures or something rather?  It would have been nice if they were more specific, but I didn't want to push any buttons.

Probably wise.  Kind of a tough pill to swallow though, since various artists have interpreted visual aspects of the characters in a number of different ways.

Oh well, at least you still get to do stuff for FFG!  Better luck next time friend.

That's actually what I used to love about the 40K universe, all the different artistic visions that were shown in the older books (which actually prompted me to do my Chaos Champion concepts).  I guess when the franchise started getting really popular, they felt the need to standardize the universe for some reason.

Thanks, I'll be sure to post my next attempt here once I get around to it!

I've always liked your work, you have an interesting take on the universe.  And who knows, maybe you can get away more with Chaos because their look is more diverse than a Space Marine.  Either way, best of luck, and at least you still have FFG!

art test for GW? how old was this piece??
its a farcry from your other pieces mate.

jubjubjedi In reply to thevampiredio [2014-11-10 05:30:13 +0000 UTC]

It's not that old, basically the test was to take two miniatures and put them in a scene, nothing too complicated.
Definitely not my best either...

What's the art requirement for GW? Also cool picture

jubjubjedi In reply to Nemesis-Virus [2014-11-09 00:37:05 +0000 UTC]

Besides being a competent illustrator, they really want you to make your characters match their miniatures.  They are really protective of their intellectual property.

Thanks for the comment!

jubjubjedi In reply to Nemesis-Virus [2014-11-09 03:05:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  Yeah, out of 8 different things to look out for, I only missed 1, that being the miniature-accuracy.

Nemesis-Virus In reply to jubjubjedi [2014-11-09 03:10:16 +0000 UTC]

What wasn't miniature accurate in this?

jubjubjedi In reply to Nemesis-Virus [2014-11-09 04:56:12 +0000 UTC]

Not sure, as someone pointed out, it might be the jaw shape of the Ork...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nemesis-Virus In reply to jubjubjedi [2014-11-09 05:36:37 +0000 UTC]

If that's the case, you should of said that Ork jaw was shaped like when was born(or grown, since he's part fungi)

jubjubjedi In reply to Nemesis-Virus [2014-11-09 10:33:09 +0000 UTC]

LOL!  Well, they actually gave me two pictures of miniatures for this illustration.  Really though, I could have made that particular change in 5 minutes, but I guess it's a perfect illustration or nothing first time around... or try again with a fresh illustration which I may or may not do.

jubjubjedi In reply to Nemesis-Virus [2014-11-10 09:05:00 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I can always try again, though I'd have to start from scratch.
It was a test to be part of their freelance pool of official GW artists.

Thanks!  Yeah, apparently it doesn't match up with their miniatures enough... not sure what that means really, but I get the feeling that they are not really interested in explaining it to me, LOL...

3liteChomp In reply to jubjubjedi [2014-11-07 10:23:16 +0000 UTC]

Looking at the Ork i get what they would mean with it not matching their miniature. The face really doesn't match that of an ork, it doesn't widen at the bottom not is the jaw forward as it should. If you look at these Boyz www.coolminiornot.com/pics/pic…  you can see a clear difference between the heads/faces.

Other than that i don't see anything wrong. The Space Marine looks awesome.

jubjubjedi In reply to 3liteChomp [2014-11-07 18:53:08 +0000 UTC]

True, I see that!  It would have been an easy fix, but I'm guessing they simply expect their artists to already know this.  Miniature reference is hard to use because they often have exaggerated features, such as enlarged heads, hands, etc.  Having worked with Fantasy Flight Games for their 40K stuff, which always uses miniatures as reference, you have to do some degree of interpretation...

Well, you took a very free way with the Boltgun, the most iconic weapon of the universe. That might be it.
