Description Watercolor on Arches 300lb CP. 15x21

A barrel Cactus in bloom in high desert Nevada. These are some of the most vibrant flowers one can find anywhere and delicate too but try not to get too near as those thorns are quite painful!

But so hardy as well, we could go many years w/o rain and it would still bloom as beautifully!

Reminds me of the Alaskan tundra, much of which is desert in terms of annual rainfall, and also very greedy about holding on to whatever water it gets, and full of flowers if you get down and look closely.

Neat, I would like to see them. This is a cactus with very many thorns(ouch!) When we have a lot of rain or snow in the winter the desert is awash with many beautiful desert flowers in the spring and summer, too sad but this only happens every few years, but the cactus ALWAYS blooms

I had a real close look at this painting and i adore the colours in the blades of grass...it must have been painstaking work...but the result is a beautiful piece of art work i am a fan of painting flowers myself, can i ask, how did you create the texture in the rocks in the background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

judylee In reply to fizzymizz [2005-08-25 06:28:54 +0000 UTC]

Okay about the background, for the rocks I worked mostly wet in wet and then used salt. I also used spatter after it was bone dry, and basically that was it. I had never used salt on rocks before but I really like the effect in this particular piece. Thanks for asking.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. Since you live in the UK i guess you don't see cactus very often those blades of grass are actually thornes on the cactus I have to travel today but i promise I will tell you about the rocks when I get back, I checked out your gallery for a sec, will give it more time (also when I get back) you do very lovely work also! Talk to you later!
