Description Still need to write the desc but I wanted to submit this just to show that I didn't ... throw in the towel just yet...
EDIT: Done the description, although it's 2am and I haven't slept properly in 2-3 days so I cannot attest to the quality of writing. Also I'm generally not good at writing. Welp.

Contest entry for AdamFegarido 's and Malamarvellous Round 2.
The assignment was to design an Oceanic/Beach variant of EventHorizontal 's Warvern (Line Contest Entry ).

______________________________________________________________________

According to its creator, Warvern usually live alone in craggy mountainious areas, and they are extremely territorial. They routinely fight each other to claim each others terriotories. The scars are made because only warvern's crystals can scratch their skin. The wings are torn from battles.

Key points to note: They are very bulky, their stats indicate a heavy reliance on their physique rather than latent powers, and likely have heavily armoured skin.

They fight well on solid terrain, but the beaches and oceans are usually not (except for rocky shores) and there is no cover from the elements - Warvern can retreat to caves etc. if conditions are unfavourable on the mountains. In order to adapt they needed to increase their flexibility and agility, Warvern with leaner, smaller and lighter bodies can move easier on the shores and reach further into the waters for food.

The crystal armour development was restricted to specific areas of the body, such as the head and claws. Crystal protrusions elsewhere caused unnecessary hindrance with the additional weight. The chest, arms and tail have become bare, the body more streamlined.

The increase in mobility has in turn caused a more acute awareness of their surroundings - the original warvern were highly resistant to damage but the lighter forms do not have that luxury, they have to plan their movements and pathways more thoroughly, and gained a better understanding of movement in 3-d space. This was a necessary step in order to take advantage of their more developed wings. These warvern variants are still highly territorial but will not so easily resort to physical violence to settle disputes. Warning cries, blasts of wind, slashing at the air and other intimidation tactics meant that battle damage was not as prevalent here as it was in the mountains, the wings were allowed to develop properly.

With their wings fully functional and their grasp of movement they can now expand their territorial range, and make more use of the ocean as a food source. The Warvern have even learned to swim by applying a similar flying technique underwater, using their forearms and tail as additional sources of propulsion and steering. With much of their time being airborne or underwater, their hind legs were not seeing as much use (the tail did what they could but better in most cases, apart from traversing on land) and so have had their resources reduced - less muscle mass and bone development. With their ability to move around by flying, the Warvern are not as highly territorial as the original Warvern, though they do occasionally fight from time to time.

Wing-like membranes from the legs connect to the tail, as well as much smaller membranes from the elbows to the abdominal area increase the surface area of Warvern to assist in gliding.

Typical behaviour of the coastal warvern is gliding close to the surface of the ocean, diving, or sunbathing at the coast, wings spread out to catch the suns rays - they internalise the heat energy which they use to aid their flight. While sunbathing Warvern are very docile, even enduring the company of other warvern also looking to catch the sun rays in the morning. Apart from mating and sunbathing, Warvern are solitary pokémon. Note that the front of Warvern is dark coloured and the back is white - like leaves you see in real life, the sun facing side is darker to absorb as much light as possible, the other side is lighter to reflect the light back into the darker side and prevent it passing through.

Inspired by: Marine Iguana, Shearwater family eg Great Shearwater, White tip reef shark, Black Tip reef shark, Goblin Shark (only slightly, for the head shape), War Planes (vaguely)

(My brain's dead trying to type this, I apologise to those that actually read all of that)

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the colouration is inpired by that of the shearwaters and the black tip reef shark, though the white was kept also as a nod to the whitening that marine iguanas get when they get rid off excess salt from their bodies. I also wanted to give it a more traditional wyvern look with two legs and wings so the hindlegs are sort of halfway merging with the tail. Apparently there's a rare variant of wyvern called a sea-wyvern that has a fish tail instead of a barbed one, so that works out.

Probably forgetting more details but I won't bore you with them if I remember ^_^;

man, i keep coming back to look at the head. I made a Final Fantasy X Aeon with the same head shape and ive never been able to recreate despite my deep desire to return to that design, and yet you so effortlessly managed to ace it.

Man i miss that design

The head was the first thing I imagined when I was thinking of streamlining Warvern. It's just a cool dragonic/maybe monsterbird head shape, I guess that was my stroke of luck!

Man you definitely have the skills - I think you should revisit it! I'd love to see that!

Thank you!

It's more of a collaborative effort between me and EventHorizontal, since I took the original's head as a base and streamlined it

I think I can't really stress how much I liked the whole change of this variant, it's simply so well detailed and so biologically correct! I don't dislike Alolan forms (though A-Raichu could have a better explanation) but if every Alolan form (or whaterver future regional variation) were like this I would love every single one!

Also, the idea of Decisive Blitz is really cool!

I might have gone overboard with the psuedoscience behind it xD

I think I can get away with that in this case mostly due Fighting and Flying as types are the most 'realistic' types. In the sense that they rely on the application of body parts to do techniques (even the wind based moves are in most cases done by manipulating the air flow with wings). Not as supernatural as say, fire or psychic. A lot of the existing alolan forms have minute physical changes but can have drastic shifts in type, which lends me to believe Pokémon don't necessarily need to adapt their general physical traits too much if their type can compensate - you see this with the more 'supernatural' types.

Before I go on an incomprehensible tangent, I just wanted to say thanks! I actually liked A-Raichu since I see it as a nod to the blue-eyed Pikachu (Puka) episode in season 1 of the anime. I just don't like its ears Dx (Being shell based is neat, but they just look weird to me)

I liked the idea of Gale Wings but wanted a bit of a strategic element to it, Decisive Blitz was the answer I came up with. I'm not sure how viable an ability it is, but I'm glad you like it!

Oh well, you're pretty right, if it isn't a change that relies so much in the physical then it wouldn't need so many changes in that part. But what can I say ? I enjoyed so much the whole explanation of the change!

You're welcome! I like it too (in fact more than the regular Raichu, it's really cute!) but I don't like that the most probable reason of it's change is told as "It could be thanks to eating pancakes" haha

I don't think that Decisive Blitz would be an abusable ability like many others, but it could be useful in long battles to take advantage of that priority when both sides have been throwing attacks and walling them effectively so the battle doesn't change until some player makes a drastic change or the pokémon start running out their PP.

Also, thank you so much for the watch!

I tried to do Warvern justice - hopefully I did!
I'm glad I'm not judging for this contest, I feel especially the top 3 are gonna be such close calls. Everyone did really well this round!

This wasn't the original design I was going to submit too, I spent the last 2 nights after work revamping this guy because of the other entries - especially yours and JWNuts' entries. That's why I'm pretty late T_T
