Description

The K'Imtiq are a species of peaceful sophonts inhabiting a small, humid planet. It can be tough for outsiders to tell members of this species apart as they have no real distinctive features apart from the size, arrangement and number of spikes along their back as well as minute differences in their coloration. Apart from that, they are virtually identical: long necks ending in a sensory node. Their six limbs as well as the webbed feet are a bright pinkish-red to blend in with the vegetation when hunting for aquatic animals. Their vocalization consists of a number of clicking and crackling noises as well as plosives (the K in their name symbolizing a click in the back of the throat, the Q a voiceless uvular stop) with only a select few vowels and consonants in between, making communicating with them extremely difficult for many other species without a translator.

Inhabiting a small, humid planet orbiting an unstable star, the K'Imtiq have evolved to sense and cope with the frequent solar flares. A disk-shaped sensory organ sensitive to ultraviolet light acts as an early warning system, alerting them of dangerous solar flares. In such cases (when outside), they flatten out the thick, scaly skin covering their central body segment. Retracting/folding the rest of their body and their appendages underneath this protective umbrella, they get close to the ground to wait out the flare. In addition to this, they also tend to cover themselves in mud as an additional layer of protection. Their eyes can be covered in a dark nictitating membrane to shield them from harmful uv radiation. While they are mostly adapted to a wading through the shallow waters and thick mud of their homeworld, foraging for food with their curved, beak-like jaws as well as their dexterous fingers, they are also excellent swimmers able to spend months on open waters.

They exhibit the unusual quirk of having no concept of personal possession. In their culture, everything belongs to everyone — in all aspects of life. The hermaphroditic K'Imtiq don’t form any monogamous bonds, the idea of parents as anything other than the biological meaning is absurd to them as their children are raised and educated in nurseries/schools. They don’t know who their parents or their children are. Living in giant communal houses, they can freely use any of the available sleeping mounds, food is distributed in cafeteria-like eating halls.
This mindset without personal possession lead to quite a few problems after first contact. Not only were the K'Imtiq perceived as naive and slightly annoying, they were also taken advantage of as they let anyone freely harvest chiligrass. Due to the high demand, this spicy plant that makes up a majority of the K'Imtiq diet, was harvested en masse and transported off-world to be sold for abhorrent prices on the intergalactic market, which lead to the decline in the populations of both the chiligrass as well as the K'Imtiq themselves.

Since then, the Unity has placed the K'Imtiq homeworld under their protection by establishing multiple outposts and establishing trade routes with the natives. This not only protects the fairly oblivious K'Imtiq, it also gives Unity a monopoly on the chiligrass.

This was a fairly quick digital piece because I wanted to speed up my digital art process so it might be a bit rough around the edges... I really wanted to get back into this project as well as just uploading more frequently again so I hope you like it anyways.

Yeah, they’re sorta like the ultimate communists in a way... luckily for them, there isn’t really such a thing as Americans anymore at the time this project takes place in

Thank you very much, I am glad you like it! And yes, it is indeed a sophont
Yeah, having a background adds another layer of realism and makes it look more grounded as opposed to just a creature floating in a white void

Awesome design! Great balance of uniquely alien and yet grounded in recognizable animal features.

Thank you very much! This balance is something I aim for with most of my designs so I am really happy it comes across as such

Oh I love this design! And the red reed-like plants in the wetland behind it look really interesting too. Have you thought much about what wildlife inhabits this world?

Thank you very much! I can’t really take too much credit for the background as I used a photograph that I just edited a bit but I am very glad you like it nonetheless
Yes, I did actually have an idea for a predatory worm-like animal inhabiting the same sort of biomes as these guys that I was gonna mention in the description but it felt a bit clunky and forced so I omitted it. I did have the idea of making these companion pieces for the main sophont designs in which I show off some special parts of their society, their behavior or different creatures they might share their homeworld with so the predatory worm might still make an appearance somewhen in the future

The very first concept for this was actually even more bird-like with a very prominent keel bone, wings and backwards-bending legs so that first impression was actually rather accurate

I designed an aquatic sophont before which can be found here: Sophonts 2: different biochemistry , but there will definitely also be more as it is something which is often overlooked

Oh I like this one, a lot more animalistic feeling than most sophonts people make.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juniorWoodchuck In reply to AntFingers [2019-05-12 10:32:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Yeah, I tend to give my sophonts a more animalistic most of the time as I feel like it creates a more interesting feel and contrast... plus, it sort of makes them more believable in my eyes if they’re not too humanoid (which is not to say I don’t have any humanoid designs coming up)

AntFingers In reply to juniorWoodchuck [2019-05-17 03:29:42 +0000 UTC]

Intriguing. I always like seeing humanoid bodyplans used unconventionally.

Even more glad then
I’m trying to make myself practice digital art more frequently so there might be more soon-ish... Especially since I actually have a whole bunch of different ideas and designs for this project which I have had lying around for months now. The lore still needs some fiddling with and I should probably come up with the descriptions already but it should be pretty cool anyways

Ryan-Bowers In reply to juniorWoodchuck [2019-05-12 10:42:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah please keep going, I’m actually writing for my sci-fi universe too nothing good yet but i made up a new sophont last night whilst working on it, really looking forward to seeing more of your work

Anything you can tell me about that sophont already?

Ryan-Bowers In reply to juniorWoodchuck [2019-05-12 11:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Well in my story so far one of my protagonists has encountered a group of them, they greet him by waving a set of mandibles whislt bobbing their head... thats all i have so far that and they’re called the H’ul and they’re relatively newcomers to the galactic community
