Description

Wheezers are a species of warm-blooded raptiloid sophonts from a geologically hyper-active planet. Volcanic eruptions and lava flows are so common that many plant species have adapted to the extreme heat, some even relying on fire for reproduction. Being exclusively bipedal, one toe on each foot has evolved into a structure resembling small arms tipped with two flexible fingers in order to manipulate the world around them. When not in use, these manipulators are folded up against their legs as to not interfere with locomotion. With their two-parted eyes, they can perceive depth in front of them as well as simultaneously looking to the sides – a remnant of their life lower down on the food chain. Adorning the snout of their distinctively marked heads, multiple motile and hypersensitive whiskers aid in tactile sensing as well as detecting vibrations in the air around them. Apart from their function as sensory organs, the whiskers also play a role in social interactions and courtship as rubbing them together is considered a physically affectionate act – a gesture comparable to kissing in humans of past centuries.

Research has shown that the planet they inhabit used to be devoid of any form of life until complex organisms started showing up in the fossil records a couple of million years ago. This discovery has led to the belief that the planet and its inhabitants are the result of a large-scale terraforming and seeding effort utilizing genetic material from another world, a trend that seems to have been going on for a while as there are a lot of similar instances spread all over the universe. Due to their tendency to flare up, it is unwise to talk about such theories to the wheezers though as it is rather offensive and blasphemous to them as it contradicts their own beliefs. Seeing as they are quick to forgive though, it should not be too big of a problem as long as it does not happen too often.
Despite being fairly small (about 1.7 meters) in comparison to the other creatures from their homeworld, they were able to tame or domesticate many of the larger species, hunting many of the larger predators to extinction or losing them to the loss of habitat. Despite being technologically advanced enough to construct different types of vehicles, they seem to favor beasts of burden, going so far as to utilize native fauna as mounts when on different planets or simply bringing some with them. Farms and industrial animal breeding are fairly widespread on their homeworld, different types of animals being bred to fulfill certain roles. This can range from heavy lifting beasts of burden to animals bred for sport and racing or even designer animals used as symbols of status and influence.

Their somewhat odd and slightly derogatory name is a reference to their vocalization which sounds like a series of chattering gasps, coughs and panting noises. Attempts have been made to transliterate the name they have given their species but the letters of the alphabet can not properly replicate their name. Thanks to current translator technologies, this is not really a problem anymore but one should still be cautious not to call them Wheezers to the face.

How funny would be having a debate with these guys without traslators

I found fascinating their domestication abilities, do this is only limited to Transport, food and Entertainment or do they also use fauna for more mundante purposes like construction or medicine?

I reckon it would be comparable to that video of a guy arguing with a goat

Yeah, I pictured them as really using animals for many of the same purposes that we would use machines. They’d definitely be of help in both construction and medicine, I could even imagine there being things like organic coffee-machines in the form of animals secreting a special liquid that they ingest. They would still be recognizable as a form of fauna though, it’s not like they have turned them into organic machines or anything like that.

That's more interesting of what I've though

Honestly trying to imagine the house of a wheezers the thing that comes to my mind would be like somebody having a whole pet zoo but every creature has a special function creating this kind of "house ecosystem" around them, just imagine some species shaped to clean the dirt on the ground, other able to generate clothes when needed and even some with the ability to give meat and regenerate without the need to buy it outside, you can just take it and it will grow it back...

Maybe I'm thinking too much on this....

Damn, a house ecosystem sounds like an amazing term for it!
I must admit that i had originally intended it to be less extreme than what you have described here but reading your ideas about it really made me want to lean more into that extreme domestication aspect of it with specially bred organisms to fulfill mundane roles in the household. Your ideas are really awesome and inspiring, would you mind me using them? Because I can really vividly see those different creatures... perhaps the "clothing-generator“ could use natural fibers to weave dresses or maybe they even have something like spinnerets with which they can create organic fabrics. The meat-creatures could be something gecko-like that grows a big muscular tail that can be plucked off and that regrows after a while without really negatively impacting the creature... Another interesting aspect would be that the wheezers would not really have to pay for electricity or stuff like that, instead having to pay for food to keep their appliances alive. (Though I imagine them still having electricity)

Oh Yes of course I would love to see this concept being part of the civilization of these beings
Yeah, they wouldn't need at all electricity unless they have to use special devices that organic beings cant emulate or is not efficient, maybe like communication or special transport like spaceships.

I also imagine that with the appropriate regulation they could create a functional trophic chain that would allow them to maintain their functional home ecosystem without waste resources, with devices creatures making wastes, which can be put with special decomposers, to then benefit some base of the chain as autophore or sessile heterotrophs that could serve as food for the other house organisms and allow an almost self-sufficient ecosystem that needs little expense in the long term, only replaceable if the organism dies or becomes ill

Awesome, thanks!
Exactly, that’s what I have been thinking too... they’d basically just use machines for things that animals could not to. Things like specialized vehicles, computers and even mundane things like automatic doors, radios and stuff like that would be electric but it might also be a newer invention for them, relatively speaking

Oh yeah that’s a really good point! If it goes that deep, they might also have specialized plants that not only gives the house animals shelter but also fulfills the role of air purifiers or room scent or something like that.
Their houses would probably look pretty interesting as they would not only be built for the wheezers themselves but also for the numerous organisms used as appliances, perhaps having specialized openings and walkways in and on the walls to allow them to get from floor to floor to do their duties. Or perhaps the wheezers would have these sort of elevated walkways and platforms that keep them off the ground where food waste and things like that would fall to be cleaned and utilized by the house organisms.

Yep, I am planning to make this project more interconnected with a sort of overarching lore and story to tie it all together rather than just having them as standalone pieces

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juniorWoodchuck In reply to doublejota [2019-05-30 18:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!
It is a rather small rocky planet, somewhere between Mercury and mars in size. The atmosphere is rather dense and hot, rich in carbon dioxide, water vapor and other greenhouse gases. It is believed that the terraforming process might have had something to do with it becoming so geologically active but that’s not really certain. Be that as it may, there’s a lot of rather quick tectonic movements resulting in frequent earthquakes and many volcanoes.
If there’s anything specific you’d like to know, ask away and I’ll try to answer as best as I can

This design was actually for another project that never went past a couple of sketches during the idea generation stage but I liked it too much to just scrap it forever

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juniorWoodchuck In reply to Ryan-Bowers [2019-05-30 18:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they tend to construct their cities in less volcanically active areas, preferably on higher ground. Apart from seeking out elevated areas, their buildings are also raised up on platforms so they are away from any potential danger or hazards that might be on the ground
