Amazing stuff! The koupidactylus looks like a bird. Like, those are definitely toes. It's eyes really throw me off, though. Maybe the other one is also a bird, with derived feathers for cillia? No idea how they lost their bodies, though. I also don't know how in the world they could be swimming in the air, especially since it says somewhere on EARTH. Maybe the air is really, really dense somehow?

Thank you!
I must admit that I stretched the parameters of the project a bit with this one and the meaning of «somewhere on Earth» is very loose... forgot to mention that in the description itself

Ah... Thank you for replying. I suspected as much. That opens the door for some really crazy possibilities... I'm to guess it's on some far far future abandoned space habitat that been keep from leaking for millions of years with some crazy technology.

Your creatures are always so fascinating!
I would guess, that both creatures here are highly derived birds. At first look, they seem to be very fishlike but the beaks and especially the flippers of Koupidactylus are somehow birdlike. The latter reminds me on the toes of rails.
The Cephalonosoma looks like a very cute cross between a bird, a ctenophore and somehow also a gastrotrich.
Very fascinating indeed!

It’s pretty interesting to me that a lot of people see it as a fish of sorts... I’m always afraid the designs are too obvious but I’m glad this does not seem to be the case

Gosh, I love this series with a passion! The simple, ambiguous descriptions and the clean style of the images really sell it!
I know you leave plenty of room for viewer speculation, so I'll do just that. Some of the details on this one make it look small, like the floating pollen and rock-like structures, so perhaps it's an experiment, maybe left in low Earth orbit? The plants look like bryophytes and angiosperms, but their lack of leafiness and the description of the environment as "dark" make me think this scene is in a container of some sort. I'm fairly certain that the Koupidactylus is a vertebrate, likely a ray-finned fish, and the Wingerdam a cephalopod, but I'm unsure on the Cephalonosoma. Another cephalopod, perchance?

That's cool. It is hard to tell where they live, because it is clearly some sort of 0g environment. I think they may be descedants of terrestrial animals genetically modified by men to fill the environment of a hollow asteroid (which was maybe some sort of generation ship to travel to another star), whose crew needed something to eat.

Oi, I really love this! THe design of the creatures are phenomenal, fitting into this alien, intriguing biome of plants :3
What made you think of this idea?
What is SSoE?

juniorWoodchuck In reply to hans-sniekers-art [2019-02-18 21:20:58 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, I am glad you like it!
I often do research on random things online which then leads to me looking up and reading about different things all day which can be pretty inspiring... I think this one came from one of those research frenzies as well.
Well... SSoE is still a bit of a mystery as I do not yet want to explain what exactly it is, I just wanted them to be glimpses of something that could be or could have been and let people fill in the blanks with their own theories and explanations. I will write an explanation for it somewhen soonish but I still want it to be more or less ambiguous. (and SSoE simply stands for Somewhen, Somewhere on Earth...)
It actually started out as an idea I had on the train to school out of the wish to make my creative process a bit faster and so that I could create pictures that might be a bit out of my comfort zone as they include scenes, different dynamic poses and some environmental details

Schoolwork’s going alright... had a sort of semester break though we still had to work on a specially assigned project which is a bit strange... Apart from that, it’s mostly theory at the moment and i am working on my semester paper (about modern trends in the artistic depiction of dinosaurs)
How about yourself?

Yes, I hate it when school forces you to work on school during the breaks ....
Oh that's interesting! Could you share some key points with me of this paper? I am also wanting to produce some more palaeoart
I am alright. Tired and in dire need of a break but getting one next Friday and onwards. Currently, school is alright, we have to plan most of it ourselves but I'm trying to work hard in the coming weeks so I'm finishing it off alright. I'm slowly moving towards the endgame and I need to work hard to make it all work for the next 1 1/2 years but after that, I'm done and I can start working a job. (Guess I won't study onwards)
Art is alright, I am producing a lot of works and I'm hoping to move from 1 piece a week to 2 pieces a week to show online!

It kinda destroys the whole point of having breaks...
Well it breaks down some of the more modern trends such as feathers, coloration, lips, etc and describes what those are based on and how it used to be painted before... I can give you a better summary once I finished writing it. (or I’d need more precise questions so I could give more precise answers)
Oh alright, so you’re pretty much at the same point in your studies as I am at the moment.
Do you already have any plans for what to do after/where to work? Or will you use the time after to travel?

I get you not seeing any reason to go into higher education, instead opting for work. I reckon it is actually more fulfilling as you’ll get to do more practical stuff instead of just sitting around, cramming informations into your head. I actually did some apprenticeships as a carpenter as well as some other little jobs as a gardener and in the local zoo and though it can be quite hard work sometimes, it made me happier than just studying for some possible future I’m not too certain about.
What kind of work would it be you’re interested in?

Yes, I've also experience this to be true, beng active and making one's hands dirty is really god, it drains one's energy and it makes feel like you actually did something usefull :3
So I want to work at a place where they improve products or processes. I don't want to work on something that's not really there, not really present (like a new hight-tech technique that not seems to be starting)
But I do not realyl know, I just like the idea of improving something already established :3
Yet I have been thinking these last few days and I love drawing and painting so much that it would seem to feel like a waste not to use that, so I'm going to pursue art as a career as well, alongside my science education (so trying to do two studies at one)
What do you want to do for the future?
Thanks for giving such thoughtful responses, I really love tlaking to you

Yes, that sums it up pretty well!
Oh alright, that sounds quite interesting, actually!
So would that be like a designer or is there a job exclusively just for that?
You know, I don’t know if going to art school has necessarily heightened my enjoyment of drawing per se... it might have actually done the opposite. Because I spend all day drawing stuff for school, I don’t really have the energy or the will to draw something just for me once I am home. (Might also be because I get home at 6 or 7 in the evening so there’s not much left of the day)
Honestly, I don’t know... for the longest time, my dream job has been concept artist at weta workshop or just concept artist for movies and tv in general. I’d still like doing that, but recently I have also been wanting to just do something more close to the earth like maybe gardener, gamekeeper, farmer, stuff like that... I’d also just love to be independent
Anytime, the pleasure’s all mine

Alright, gotcha
Yeah, I think it has helped me improve my art, I think I had just hoped more from it
Well the good thing about art is that you can always do it in your spare time... so a gardener/artist is completely feasible (and I actually know somebody like that). I’ve worked at a zoo before btw... it’s great fun and I could imagine doing that as a job for a while too.
I feel like that is a good solution as well, because you can achieve just as much if you teach yourself if you take it seriously and try to push yourself not only in the techniques and with the tools you’re familiar with but by also experimenting with new things to see what works for you and so you can use all that accumulated knowledge.

Well the best way to get started with earning money for your art is participating in contests and stuff like that... there sometimes are some for designing christmas cards and things like that... Not only could you get some money with that, but you’d also be putting your name out there
Yes, as long as you are dedicated to whatever you’re doing, you will succeed

It's really a beautiful concept to begin with, I like the temporal uncertainty that's designed into every single piece. It could be a far future, an unknown snippet of the past or an entirely different timeline, but by golly is it always pretty to look at. ❤️
