Time to take a break from the long exposure shots for a short while because since it’s my birthday today I would like to take you to a special place, a place very precious to me.

Gridia is considered to be the beach of Nenita village, the village I was born in, but in fact it is not a single beach but a series of rough, wild, desolate and for the most part inaccessible little beaches. I’ve spent big chunks of my childhood summers there, exploring all those beaches, scraping my feet raw on the rough rocks, collecting and eating urchins and limpets, torturing crabs and sleeping my afternoons away under the sun (no skin cancer yet, don’t tell the doctors or else they might use me for experiments!). Even in summer you will almost never find anyone swimming there and it is never referred to in any of the must-visit brochures, not because it’s a well-kept secret but because most people, even the villagers, prefer the comfort of soft sand.

I had never looked at these beaches with a photographic eye but when I started thinking of places in Chios worthy to be explored in terms of photography/waterscapes those beaches immediately took their place in the top of my list especially the one in the photo since it’s so unique: it consists of only one humongous rock plate extending its way deep into the sea.

Most of you have probably already read how we came to this place on that particular day from *KirlianCamera ’s journal, but I’ll give you a summary since it explains its title: we set off at about 5.30 in the morning and drove ourselves through amazingly hard rain (which was just getting harder mile after mile) and hail, having abandoned our photographic plans miles ago, driving just for the fun of it, not even hoping to SEE the place since we could hardly see a few meters ahead of us in the heavy rain. Miracles DO happen though and as if the password was that “it must be somewhere down there” I dared utter when we reached the place, someone up there suddenly turned the tap off!!!

I completely forgot all about my much loved long exposure shots the minute I saw the waves licking those rocks and decided to try and capture the wild beauty of this morning.

There are extremely few people I took to this place (actually only 2) up to now, cause for me it is a very precious secret place. I hope you enjoy your visit here!
