Description 12"x12"x1.5" acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas

I painted this in the middle of my most recent commission more to relax and not think about anything other than letting go of thinking. Interesting what happens through a cleared mind. This is more a sketch in concept to me, but I thought I'd share it with you guys since I'd sell it as is just like any other piece

JustinChristenbery In reply to TheTulip [2010-11-28 07:14:49 +0000 UTC]

Nope...I used a fairly worn down filbert brush. #2 I believe it was.

Lots of paint squirted out straight onto the canvas, an even misting of water from a spray bottle, and maybe 15 drops of acrylic flow release medium. The trick is to not mix the colors so much that the brush strokes are lost, but enough to create depth w/ gradations.

Thx for commenting.

Hi
I think this is a great painting in many ways. I am a art student at a swedish university. I would like to ask some question about your art. If that is something you would like to do, get back to me.

It's very interesting. I like how the colors are able to stand out so well and how so places are more bold on color than others. These and your amazing skills at painting really help to make this picture work. I know that you didn't have much in mind when painting this, but to me it looks like a sunset on an ocean

Oh these colours are so vibrant. I love it. It just calls out to me. I wish I were seeing this in person so I could feel the texture.

Love your method of blending on the canvas. And I love how this looks like a sunset over the ocean, but it could be abstract, as well.

Very well done!

Jealousy *can* be a great place to find the motivation to improve...I do it constantly in galleries, museums, and even here at deviantArt and elsewhere on the net. Simply believe in your own ability and start digging in. If you believe in yourself with all you have and keep at it, I promise you will surpass those who once impressed you(though you're also guaranteed to find new and even greater influences )

Course everything of yours reminds me of something else. Its very beautiful. I would comment more but I am feeling horribly melodramatic today. Probably not the best time to finally sit and comment.

I like the way the bands of colour seem to generate ambiguous space, so that the image can seen in a number of different ways, as referencing sea or sky of land.

Brilliant composition

Thankyou much for looking and commenting- my apologies for the delayed response, as I always greatly appreciate your comments and insight. The generated space you mention is definitely my favorite aspect of this piece as I was nearly taken aback when, after letting it dry for a couple days, I returned to look at it and saw it as the image it has become instead of the fairly flat and abstract "bands of color" I remembered laying down when I painted it.

You're welcome.

It's interesting to hear from other artists how their work evolves. Words, for me,often have similarly unexpected properties.
