The Devil Looking Back

Digital Painting 2017 By Justin Gedak

This is another one done completely from my imagination, and with no photo references. Years ago I used to paint a lot of surrealism works. I kinda fell out of it for a long time for some reason or another. I’m really happy to be getting back into doing this surreal sort of artwork again though–and also to be combining it with my gothic fantasy portrait themed work.

It’s funny, people often ask what type of drugs I’m on, or if I’m drinking when I come up with these ideas. I never really got into the drug scene, and over the past 5 or so years I’ve pretty much completely given up drinking. So stone sober, and not drug induced at all lol.

I don’t really know where I get the ideas from.

I usually start with drawing or painting something simple like an eye or a tree, and kinda let whatever wants to come out come out. With this one I had a very vague idea of what I wanted, but it ended coming out waaaay different than what I originally intended.

Would love to hear what people think of this one compared to my previous works.

I am quite a new to your art, and have become a fan through the piece "Hope".
Looking back your works, I noticed you had start drawing vertical scratches even overlapping on the face after "Barbarian". Those vertical scratches look like cold rain to me and impress me the overwhelming grief of the warrior. So I think you're an artist who not only draws surrealistic figures but also details their inner heart with very skillful brushwork.
On the other hand, looking at your previous surreal pieces, I think you haven't used such skill, as if you just rely on the motif itself. As you mentioned here, you might have drawn depending on the things you'd already done. In this piece, however, I think you have tried to unite the both ways: the way to draw your surreal pieces and that for the medieval warrior pieces.
I can't imagine what is a surrealistic "emotion" and how it looks like. But I may find it in your future works...
Thank you for your nice gallery. I really enjoyed!
