I must say: Maokai has always seemed kind of cute, and not in a particularly good way. This would actually frighten me if I saw it, and since Maokai is supposed to be elemental tree fury spawned by hate filled magics, this skin suits him far more than any other I have seen. As for the sapling, you're on the right track, just reimagine the cute little buggers they have now as a more feral, vicious version. Perhaps 4 legged mini tree spider creatures? Or a wider maw version of the big Maokai, with disproportionally big "teeth"? Good luck and great art.
